Alonzo Blair of Shelby ville, judge of the Bush-Shelby district, has made a ruling of interest to the county treasurers and county auditors of Indiana, the judgo holding that a county treasurer cannot collect pay for acting as city t reasurer. The decision has some bearing in Shel

by county, as the office of city treasurer was abandoned about two years ago, and since then Bert McDonald, county treasurer, and Frank Fagel, county auditor, have been doing the work. The treasurer of the countyis paid $600 a year by the city for the collection of city taxes and the auditor is paid $100 a year by the city for making ot. the tax duplicate. Before the office of city treasurer was abandoned, the treasurer collected

the city taxes and with the city clerk made up the tax duplicate. he legis

lature changed the law and provided

that the county treasurer should be the

tax collector, not only for the county.

but for the cities and incorporated

lowns as well. It was provided that

the auditor should prepare the tax dup

licate. The new law failed to make any provision for extra pay for the county officials, but afl ordinance was passed

by the. council providing that "the treasurer be paid $600 and the auditor

$100.

Alvan Moor, former county treasur

er of Rush county, brought in a bill

against the city of Rushvllle for $450

for the collection of taxes. he bill was turned down. He then brought

suit against the city and Judge Blair held that it wag the duty of the county treasurer to collect the axes of he di

stances will permit. He says he expects engineers here today to do the necessary work on the line and that the contract will bet let within a fewdays for the construction work, and that they expect to have the work of grading and the steel laid in the township yet t his fall. He claims to have succeeded in financing the -road and says its construction Is certain. Eugene Purtelle, the promoter of the road, arrived in town last evening. It is understood, however, that the entire matter of the construction of the road is in the hands of Mr. Wilson and that Mr. Purtelle has lost active control of the road, but that If

. It Is built he will hnv.i some interest 1 in It for the work he has already

done. Here's hoping lhat they make good and that cars will be running through Rensselaer next year. Rensselaer Republican.

says:

"There are no demand for steel the reverse, and sumers in next

been sharpened by further price advances. "These Include $2 a ton on black sheets, and $3 on galvanized, though not all producers are yet on the new basis: $2 a ton on some sizes of

wrought ste-el pipe and on steel boiler tubes and about 50 cents on billets and sheet bars. "The position taken by leading producers In opposition to such prices as might check demand works against any simultaneous scramble to buyers to save themselves from higher prices later. Where the steel companies sell for next year to manufacturing consumers it Is to cover well ascertained requirements and a ban is put on speculation for an advance. "The steel corporation's increase of 206.000 tons In unfilled orders In August, and the fact that Its capacity has been fully taken up for this year on many products Indicate heavier bookings for 1913 than has been appreciated. The ability of buyers to contract for i forward deliveries at 1.30c Pittsburg for bars and 1.35c for plates and shapes is a strong Influence against an excited market. "Evidence increases that railroads will be liberal buyers of rails for isevt year. Car orders show some effect of advancing prices and Inability

to get early deliveries. "The outlook for work requiring plates and structural shapes Is excellent. Fabricators" bids on good sized contracts stll ldevelop keen competition, and there Is little danger of scarprices and curtailed building. Sheet

manufacturers who buy their sheet bars have been slow to sell for next year, but meantime sheets are higher, and this week advanced to 2.15c. "The pig Iron market shows some flagging in the prodigious buying movement of the last month. In southern iron reports of large inquiries from Europe have caused some excitement."
