East Chicago and Indiana Harbor are laboring under a severe nervous strain just now over an impending calamity. This is nothing more nor less than a game of baseball Thursday afternoon at th East Chicago park between the business men and the professional men of the Twin Cities. The worwt of it is, that everybody's got to go to this game. Nobody will be regarded as public-spirited unless he buys from one to twenty-five tick

ets. Nobody will be "comma il faut" unless he attends. There's the rub. For its all for charity, the proceeds to be turned over to the United Charities association. The poor will benefit coming end going for they neither have to see the game nor put up for It. On the contrary, what others less fortunate will put up will be used to

bu the Indigents coal, potatoes, beef shoulder, salt pork, coffee, tea and the rest of the necessities. Maybe there will be enough to stake a few to pie a la mode. In any event the end

justifies the means, although it seems almost a shame that the noble game of baseball should be thus travestied, even for so holy a cause as charity. The foregoing might tend to convey the idea that the men who are to practice are modest about their ability to play ball. Far be it from bo. Every mother's son of them thinks he can play a corking good game. Everybody else Is wise. Contemplate this lineup that represents the professional men's lineup: Captain Dr. Frank Stephens he's also to be pitcher. Ouch!). Dr. Raleigh Hale, Dr. C. C. Robinson, Dr. Frederick Sauer, Dr. Charles Johns, AV. B. Van Home, Joe Meade. M. E. Crltes (catcher), Abe Ottenhelmer and C. V. Holway. W. J. Funkey Is to captain the business men's team, whose members have not yet been selected, while Mayor Schlieker and Judge Walter J. Riley

will serve as umpires. Now, be It known, that the profes

sional men had chosen Dr. Schlieker

to play on their team. The business

mi 11 would not stand for this, how

ever. As prcfllent of the r.ast Chicago league team, they regard Doc as a semi-pro, altogether outside the amateur class. Resides, think what a

good chanre they would have to get even for real or fancied wrongs, with Doc behind the bat! Judge Riley had not yet been .asked to officiate up to noon today. When he is, he will stall around a bit and pretend he doesn't want to, but he'll want to just as hard as though he admitted It. A committee has been appointed to wait fcpon Doc Sauer to ascertain the condition of his uniform. Old residents of Indiana Harbor (does four years constitute old residence?) will remember an occasion four years ago when this doc met with a painful accident while he fumbled a ball. If the committee learns, that a certain part of the said uniform has not since

been adequately reinforced, they will have an extra large barrel or two In reserve in case of an emergency. Captain Funkey Is fixing up a dose for Dr. Robinson. He proposes to have some one standing near by when Dr. Robinson goes to bat, who will begin an arugment about T. R. This is

willing to take care of the babies of working mothars, in her own home. This wil save rent, and will prove a nice little source of revenue to aom'o woman who may have babies of her own, or who for some other reason might not be able to go out to work. A charge of ten cents a day is to be asked by the day nursery for the care of the little ones, and this is to be applied on the incidental expense. Miss Edna Hatfield is taking a babyto Mishawaka today to an orphanage there, which, if there were an institution such as is proposed by Mrs. Robinson in operation, might lie cared for by its mother assisted by what aid she could get from the day nursery. The little one taken to M.Hhawaka todoy is only one of many which have been

all that Is necessary to rattle Doc so similarly

that he won't know the difference be-(weeks.

twecn the ball and the grand stand. As far as Dr. Hale Is concerned, this is the opportunity he has been waiting for ever since a ear ago, when he distinguished himself so brilliantly at a similar event that his fellow professional men have been unable to draft a prescription adequate to reduce the swelling of his-head. Thus far it has been a secret just why W. B. Van Home was selected for any of the bases. The reason has leaked out, however. It Is that Van has such a fine bass voice. Joe Meade was chosen on the birddog theory, pure and tdmple. Mr. Crites never had any idea he knew anything about baseball until

he located his office In close proximi

ty to the offices of Dr. Robinson and Dr. Stephens. He has since been

present at so many post-mor cms on j real games and has thereby heard so often just why the game was lost or won, that he has come to the conclusion that he can play himself. It seems doubtful, however, whether he cag get the public as he can the average jury, to look at the matter from tell. The business, men have to chuckle every time they think of Doc Stephens and the figure he will cut. Here's a fellow who thinks just because he used to play two old cat pretty well, that he can pitch. Funny guy! In selecting the team there was a concerted movement to get It together without Abe Ottenheimer. But somebody heard of It, and hislsted, bo there he Is. Whether the somebody was Abe himself, has not Tieen given out for publication. C. P. Holway was put to represent the dominies. He will probably act as couch, but taking a slant at the layout he will have to handle, it Is safe

bet that he will have his hands full.

But notwithstanding; all of this, the

town Is simply wild about the ball game. Everybody is going and It's going to be a big success, much bigger than that of a year ago. which was

merely an experiment. This time It's no experiment. Men, women and children are interested and If there Is a seat vacant. Indiana Harbor and East

Chicago should be ashamed of them selves.

Bulletin It has just been learned

that the umpires are using their civic

offices to swear in a deputation of special police to protect them against the angry populace. There Is a rumor to the effect that pop-botles (no pun Intended) will be barred. A document purporting to provide for this, signed by Judge Riley and counter signed by the mayor has it Is alleged, been seen by responsible parties.

BLOOMER GIRL.S ARE COMING Indiana Harbor fans wiH have an opportunity Sunday to see a corking good game and incidentally pip a lot of good lookers. At least that is the dope that has been handed out In connection with the event. The game i3 between the Harbor team and the Boaton Bloomer Girls, a baseball organization that has never been here before, but that may be depended upon to give a particularly cjassy brand of ball. The Boston Bloomer Girls have played all over the United States and have humbled any number of fast semi-pro teams, having done good

work in Chicago and other large cities throughout the country. The Indiana Harbor lineup Is as follows: Daugh-

erty. If; Hllgendorf, ss; Lynch, 3b; A. Walsh, rf; O'Brien, of; Hoffman, 2b; Sternberg, lb; J. Walsh, c; Mar.
