could and would have been settled amicably, had it not been for the poor support that the towns represented in the league, had rendered the organization. There seems not to ?e enough public spirltand sportsmanship in Northern Indiana to support a league a a it should be supported. Where the support should have come from the public at large. It developed upon a few loyal
answer j citizens and broad-minded business men
to take the brunt of the expense. Almost every week subscriptions had to be circulated among the business men of most of the towns interested to de
fray th" exnenses of the game. This
in .spite of the fact that first class teams were placed in the field and splendid ball was being played. However with the rupture of two weeks agf, the directors i;tid managers and
others lnterest.nl talked the matter over and decided that it was not worth while prolonging the season to Us originally proposed termination. The league, thanks to the few loyal ones, is in a sound financial condition and wiil be able to pay every penny of Its indelitednes and in spite of the cold deal it has received, it is by no means dead and raiiv be in the field next year.
New people are eon st .1 1 1 1 1 y coming into Northern Indiana .especially in Lake county, and these nviy rally to the sup
port of the league next year and help to educate the older residents into a spirit of appreciation. The gamis scheduled for tomorrow nre Hammond at Indiana Harbor for a double header: Whiting nt East Chicago, Valparaiso at Gary and Crown Point at Laporte.

curred were It not for The Times discovery of the death of Esther Harrison and the efforts that were made to keep it quiet. That was what started the whole lnvetlga tion that now promises to giv West Hammond the first real cleaning up R has ever had.

One of the interesting rtories that is
being told in the papers is that of Mrs
Ethel Parker, wife of John Parker, of Ronelawn. formerly Miss Ethel Baxter
of that place.
The storv is more or less true and Is
as follows: "Foss knew me when I was only 3 years old and he was sheriff in my home town In Indiana." said Mrs.
Parker. "One day last May while he
was ridinK throuerh with two friends In an automobile he stopped and (-filled
to me while I was fishing with a boy
friend. He asked me to get into the
car and have a ride, and I consented on
his promise to bring me back home
aga in. Thrown to Floor.
"When I stepped into the car I was thrown forcibly to the floor, and Foss
explained that one of the men, dl6 not
wish his wife to see me riding with
them. We drove to Crown Point and had several drinks nnd then went to Foss' place in West Hammond. I had
no prior knowledge of the kind of place he was running. He was anxious
for me to stay ' there and be his house
keeper, but I refused and stayed at a
hotel in West Hammond.
"From there I went to Chicago the
next day. I returned to West Ham

I had borrowed and he offered me $20
a week to work for him. I consented
