since receiving a rebuff from Miss Virginia Brooks, whom he had selected as his affinity, Dr. A. P. Burrus intimates that he is not ia the matrimonial market at present, but declares he might be if he could secure Miss Helea Gould of New Tork. Referring to his affair with Miss Brooks, Burrus said: "It isn't likely Mkss Brooks would marry. She doesn't have time to court. She's got to clean up West Hammond." dV. the work to some extent and is enthusiastic about the prospects and working energetically. He has some very advanced ideas on what a night school should be and should do for the people. He believes in reaching everybody who has been unable to complete a high school course. One of the students who has enrolled is 44 years old. The school opens on Sept. 23rd and will be conducted in the Central and Washington school buildings, and in the middle of October a night school will be opened In the Wallace school, primarily for the benefit of the people in the Standard Steel Car district. In the latter school the work will be practically limited to the three R's and the domestic science. Gets Much Kneouragemeat. Speaking of the night school, work this morning. CHECKS MONON PAY SYSTEM A report submitted to the management of the Monon railroad relative to been no padding of pay rolls or excessive payment to employes. It was reported that the investigation resulted in the discovery that dead men were being carried on the payroll of the company. This rumor was denied yesterday by General Manager A. H. Westfall. "Our employes receive their pay in the form of checks," said Mr. Westfall. "As a rule these checks are forwarded through the mails. About twice a year, however, we send out a pay car and the employes are required to go to the car and sign a receipt for their checks. The pay car plan Is in vogue on a large number of railroads. The last trip of the Monon pay car did not disclose any discrepancies."
"A report recently circulated that dishonesty was discovered is a slur upon the integrity of the employes of the company." ' In discussing the outlook for business. General Manager Westfall said: "We are looking forward to an exceptionally busy period. I believe most of the railroads expect an unusually heavy volume of tonnage this fall. Unskilled labor is scarce at the present time. Last year there was an exodus of unskilled workmen from Chicago and other centers, and it Is difficult at the present time to obtain a full quota of these workmen. Many of them returned to their native countries.

He said that the Green Engineering Company was eliminated by the fact that it secured a million dollar contract in Ottawa and asked to be relieved at Hobart. There was a determined opposition to Wilson F. Brunt 'on the part of certain taxpayers and most of the trustees and so that eliminated him. j It is understod that there are some little petty Jealousies and some local politics back of the remonstrance : against the sewer building which may
be aired in the coming trial.
