Hek Spence sez it's durned easy t' see through wimmln nowadays. The city council met last evening to approve the bonds and contracts of the Crown Folnt Construction cornpan and Fred G. Hoffman for the paving of Main stret from Clark to Goldsborough and from GoldsborouKh to Anderson street. O. Rose was appointed inspector on the Job, the work being: commenced esterday. The tax levy for the ensuing; year was discussed, but it is not known whether a higher rate will be assessed at this time. Other matters Important to the city's welfare were discussed by the council, but no action taken. Counctlmen Rietman and Salisbury were the absent members. Since Crown Point has been roughhandled, as far as umpires' decisions were concerned in Its last two games with Gary and East Chicago, the crowds here are loud In their demand for the double umpire system and threaten to stop supporting the league if the raw work is continued whereby one umpire is delegated with the power to make his decisions absolute without recourse to fair play or true sport. better standing will the game have among the class of people who lend It their support. Work was started this morning on the Main street Improvement, the contractors engaging a force of men who will be kept steadily at work until the Job Is completed. A nine-pound boy arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Thomas yesterday at noon. The Times joins their many friends in extending congratulations upon the happy event. The standpipe at the waterworks plant Is receiving a coat or two of paint, Julius Schroeder having been engaged to do the work. In places the standpipe Is In very bad condition and it is only a, question of a few years when it may collapse. The council is doing the best thing under the circumstances by painting the big standpipe, without material harm. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Pahl, from east of Crown Point, an eightpound boy. Invitations have been received by Crown Point people to attend the opening of the Country club at Hammond on next Monday night. The majority of the citizens are using it for drinking water in preference to the lake water, which at times It is almost impossible to use for drinking purposes.
