ORPHEUM THEATER IS GIVEN REST ' Tha Orpheum theater in Hammond is closed for three days. It will open Thursday with Hammond's great favorite. "A Winning Miss," which will be here for a three days' engagement. Following that "The ; Seminary Girl" will be at the Orpheum for four days. Hoyt's "A Bunch of Keys" was tried out at Michigan City.; but It was so poor that It was canceled before it got as far as Hammond. The management of the theater Is going to try to save the Hammond public from seeing anything but the best shows. Maurice Hankenson, 1 who has - been th manager of the Orpheum theater for some time and who has been made the manager of the Hammond theater since it was taken oVer by the Allardts, .haB a number of fine bookings for the next month or so. Elks to Clear $1,000.

The Elks of Hammond will clear in

the neighborhood of $1,000 from the picnic which was held this year. Treasurer J. J. Ruff said that the

amount might vary a little either one

way or another, but that this would

be approximately correct.

This makes the Elks' picnic this

year the most successful one, from a financial point of viewy, that has ever

been held in Hammond. It will go a

long way towards providing the funds

with which the new club house is to

be built.

GARY PEDDLERS ANGER DEALERS . Gary peddlers from now will taave to keep on moving their pushcarts frequently, as the police will enforce the state law In this respect. Lately some forty or fifty pushcarts have been holding down choice sites near the mills and depots. The carts sell everything from fruit and tobacco to sox and hats. Some of them resembled a miniature department store and their trade was cutting In oa the merchants who last night petitioned the council that the foreign peddlera be kept on the move.

Gary Man Hurt. John McCormick. whose home is in Youngstown, O., was badly hurt yesterday morning at the Pennsylvania road's Broadway crossing, when he was hit by a freight car. He sustained a broken shoulder, two fractured ribs and internal injuries, so the authorities of the Gary General hospital say.

Policeman 111. Officer Bucker, the popular desk officer at the Gary police station, is confined to his home with a severe cold which has settled on his lungs.

New Council Rule. From now on all ordinances to be lntrodcced into the Gary common council must b in the hands of the city clerk at least four days In advance. Copies will then be mailed to the aldermen for their perusal.
