ANTI-SALOON LEAGUE FIGHTS BULL
100SRS
TIMES IK. HEAV,
AT STAS CAPITALIndianapolis, Ind., Aug. 17. The anti-saloon league has taken a stand In opposition to the liquor plank in the bull moose platform, which Is declared to be altogether in the Interests of the liquor people and not furnishing any means by which the temperance people can put the saloon out of business. In the current issue of the American Issue, the official organ of the antisaloon league. S. E. Nicholson, connected with the league, has an article on the subject In which he points out the dangers to the temperance cause which lurk in the bull moose plank. Nicholson is the' author of the Nicholson law for the regulation of sa
loons in Indiana. It will be remembered that the bull moose platform declares in favor of getting a permanent settlement of the liquor question through the Initiative and referendum, giving the people the right to vote' on the question of eliminating the saloons from the entire state. But- it declares In" favor of county local option as a temporary relief In the meantime. - Nicholson says the Initiative and referendum as a means of settling the liquor question has been a failure everywhere It has been tried, and that It does not afford the temperance people any chance to bring about the elimination of saloons. He points out
i sible for the liquor people to file a : petition signed by 3 or 10 per cent the voters, as the case may be, at any rime, thus keeping the tempexance people busy every year. If the people were to vote out the saloons In a referendum election this year the liquor people could force another referendum next year by filing their petition. Thus, he says, the question never ; would be Bettled permanently. The anti-saloon league has not made any announcement of Its Intention in the campaign. It Is the belief, however, of Ynost persons that the leasue
will finally decide to support Col. Durbin, the republican candidate for governor. It is certain that they will not support Ralston, the democratic candidate, because he was nominated by Tom Taggart in a wet convention and is running on a wet platform. It is thought that the league cannot support Keveridge because of his opposition to county option two years ago. o It is flgrured, the league cannot do otherwise than support Durbin. However, this- is merely" a guess, as the league has not said a word on the subject. The amount of money which the bull moose have to spend in the campaign In Indiana is causing a great deal of comment, because they seem
to have plenty of money for all purposes. It costs lots of money to run a state campaign, but the matter of fi
nances does not appear to trouble the
that under this plan it would be pos- bull moose la the least.
They have already set all of their machinery at work In every department. For weeks they have occupied an expensive suite of rooms In one of the large office buildings here, at a high cost, and the rooms are furnished In elaborate style. And now they have appointed George W. Stout of this city as superintendent of the press bureau, one of the most expensive parts of the campaign machinery, with B. R. Inman of Middletown as his assistant. This will mean an expenditure of thousands of dollars during the next few weeks for campaign matter, plates and other stuff which will be prepared here and sent out all over the stai- to bulIvmoose newspapers. John F. Hayes, former secretary to Senator Beveridge, has been appointed superintendent of the speakers' bureau for the state. This is another expensive feature of the campaign, for it will cost thousands of dollars to send speakers over the state for the campaign. Hayes was secretary of the republican state Committee two years ago when Edwin M. Lee was state chairman, but since then he has been connected with the M. Rumely company of Laporte. It cost a barrel of money to hold the state convention, but there did not seem to b any lack of funds with which to do It. Where does this money come from? It Is agreed here that it is coming from outside sources and this ' leads the politicians to believe that certain large interests, who are favoring the bull moose movement, are putting It Ufr 'It Is known, too, that the Marion county bull moose organization Is offering to hire the democratic ward and precinct committeemen for the campaign and that big salaries are offered. Up to this time it is not believed they have succeed In hiring any of them, but it is certain that they have the money with which to do the business. No one believes that local members of the party are putting up this money. It is coming from somewhere.

The-woman thought to be Mrs. John Boggess. missing wife of a Kansas City doctor, who is held by the Gary police, has been identified as Rose Haggerty of Cleveland. Identification was made today by Miss Haggerty's sister, who came from Ohio for the purpose. She told the police that her sister had become deranged as a result of a fall from a horse. Miss Rose is a brilliant and well educated woman. It was impossible, so the sister stated, to keep her at home and she wandered to Gary, posing as a typewriter agent, without the family's knowledge. She will return to Ohio on Monday with her sister. Descriptions of the missing Mrs. Boggess and the woman ne.ld at Gary are almost Identical. For this reason Chief Martin was of the opinion that
