an air line from Chicago to New York

The line was to be operated electrically

and was to be built so nearly as the

crow flies that It was estimated that

the trip would be made in ten hours,

Being men of ideas rather than of

wealth they early hit upon the plan of

building the line 'with a public stock

subscription. The idea was so original

and made such a strong appeal to the

the hands ef a receiver. It Is claimed that one of these attempts was by a shyster lawyer who conspired t band a rich receivership to a co-worker and divide the profits- .

But the actual construction of the

road was attended by difficulties. The first construction work was begun at

LaPorte and projected westward.

Here enormous cuts arid fills had to be made. Twenty-one miles of this road

is said to be the finest piece of Inter-

urban railway construction In the

world.

There is the 'Coffee Creek night

mare, said one of the officers of the compsny. "We thought - we never

would get that finished." .And there for miles it looked as thought the road had been compelled to make a Culebra cut through the hills.

The track is as straight as a string

but its course marks a nasty gash In the face of the earth thst is the marvel of electrical railroad engineers.

And then when the section f cuts is passed there begins the sections of fills, another of the marvels of the road. A great ridge of earth extendi clear across one of the largest swalls In that locality. And when you learn that this tremendous engineering feat was accomplished; not by the powerful Morgan and Rockefeller Interests, not by a Harriraan or a Hill with the resources of the nation back of them; but with the five dollar bill of scores of thousands of ordinary people the propect takes on a new. appearance. And then the panic of 1907 struck the country. The golden flood of subscriptions stopped. Tho people. lost interest in the project. . The. visions of vast wealth were dissipated. The company,, had issued no . bonds and consequently had no interest to pay. This was the element of safety

I that saw the company through , the

trouble some times of that remarkable money stringency. ; The officials of the company did not dare to. entrust Its funds .to any bank and so they were

kept in a strong box.

But the work was carried on Just as

If nothing had happened. Engineer Hamilton, whose heart ' was In the work, got marvelous results, with the

funds he had in hana.

But the stock holders were becoming

uneasy. They were not realizing the

fortunes from their investments that they had expected. It was difficult to keep them in line. This tack devolved upon Editor Burton of the Air Line News, a remarkable little publication which keeps the stock holders posted on every detail Of the development of the project. . It was the air line that was opened to traffic yesterday with the operation of the first car from Hammond to Laporte and South Bend so that the real significance of the trip may be appreciated In the light of the facts as outlined. But there Is another phase of the project that Is even more interesting. It Is around the air line project that a

great system of . Interurban railroads has been built. Along about the time that Gary started Attorney Frank Gavit of Whiting secured a- franchlse oh the "principal streets of Gary for a city traction line. - ' Gavit . did not have the funds with which to build his system and yet the fact was generally recognised that he had a very Valuable franchise. He went to' the Air Line for help.

That company realized that the Gary

& Interurban would be a valuable feeder for Its main line end so it bought liberally of the stock of the Gavit company. It now owns 41- per cent of the stock of the Gary & Interurban and

with Frank Gavit himself owns a controlling Interest'in the road. '

The development of the Gary Ac In

terurban Is like mil-Aladin's table. It Is another instance -of the value of an idea carried out. It began with the

nerve of a man to take a franchise when he had no idea of how he would finance the project and It promises to end as one of the largest and most successful traction projects in the entire state of Indiana. .

The Gary A Interurban is an Inde

pendent company and Its relation with

the Chicago-Uew York air line Is

merely through the, aforementioned

ownership of stock. '

Hut it has built a line on Broadway

from the Little Calumet river to the steel plant; on Fifth avenue west to Ambrldge and east to East Gary. It has built the extension to Hammond and It now building the extension to Indiana Harbor and East Chicago.

Now the air line extends only from

Goodrum. a point east of Gary, to LaPorte, or rather to South Laporte. The connecting link "between the Gary & Interurban and the Air Line ( known as the Gary & Connecting Railways.

thati their facilities for taking care of

It were taxed to the utmost. Thous

ands upon thousands of dollars were poured Into the offices of the New York-Chicago Air Line company. All together something like $6,000,000

worth of stock, which sold for 25 per

cent of Its face value, was subscribed

by the people of the United States.

Th company Itself had nothing but

Its intentions to build. Its responsi

bility was only a moral one. It is hard to imagine how that little group of en

thusiastic men must have felt whan

they found that in response to their adertlsements people literally forced

their Investments upon them. In many

cases subscriptions for stock were

thrown over the transom and could be identified only by the name pinned to

the bills or written on an envelope.

Fortunately, however, the promoters of this company were not Get-Rich-

Quick-Wallingfords. They really In

tended to carry Out their plans. They

accepted the subscriptions from thous

ands of small subscribers in absolute

good faith. So far as la known there has not been one dollar of the funds of the company misappropriated in all of the seven years of the history of the company and, had there been, several

rigid investigations of the company

'would have revealed the fact.

The best commentary on the man

agement of the company is the fact

that there have ' been three attempts,

all failures, to throw the company in

dominated by the alr(llne which owns and holds all of the stock. , '

As a further feeder for the Air Line

there was constructed what is known as the Valparaiso and Northern, a line

running north and south from Chester

ton, acrosB the main dine of the air

line, to Valparaiso. The Air Line owns 61 per cent of the stock of this company.' Valparaiso business men own the rest.

Now all of these subsidiary lines sro

owned by a holding company which is

known as the Goshen, South Bend and

Chicago Railway Company. This is

merely a road In name, however.

So the trip that was made by busi

ness men from three cities " was ef tremendous significance. Hammond reached out Its hand to Laporte and South Bend . over a traction system that promises to develop ' one of the richest farming communities In the

world, that promises to take the tired

worker to his country or surburban home and the whole system is the Idea and the creation of men who' ' were noices at the railroading game before

they started, six years ago.
