TIMES BlHEAl', ' AT STATE CAPITAL.

Indianapolis, Ind.. Aug. 9. Since the

republican state convention adopted a platform so full of progressive planks and dominated, as It was, ty a pro

gressive republican tendency, the

democrats have become frightened.

and the word has gone out from the democratic state organization to the democratic state candidates and cam

paign orators that they must at once

get busy and supplement the democrat state platform with a number

of progressive propositions. The dem

ocratic state platform Is the most reactionary platform that has been put out by any political party In Indiana

in many years. It is reactionary to

the core. It was adopted by a convention controlled by Thomas Taggart

and his gang and it was framed by a

resolutions committee that was made

up almost entirely of reactionary

democrats who were not able, appar

ently, to see that the people of Indiana, democrats and republicans alike.

are progressive in helr thought.

The situation for the democrats is

therefore serioua. The bull moose party has held its state convention

and has adopted a radically progres

sive, platform, declaring for all of the isms that have been before the people lately, and even more than that. Then along came the republicans and they

adfpted a thoroughly progressive

platform. It is not radical, but it is

what it was Intended to be a pro

gressive republican platform, on the

theory that the republican party al

ways has been a progressive party.

So It need not be a surprise If when the speaking campaign opens the democratic orators' go out and shout In favor of a public utilities commission; the regulation of corporations: workmen's compensation law, , and -many other things that are. not mentioned in the democratic state platform.- In fact, they have been ordered tn pay "

But when the club's representatives ' speech at Anderson, on August 29, and

found It composed principally of men he may" have ' to say on ' subjects that

who represented the traction and other Interests of the state, and they

were turned down In their requests for these planks. Not a single one of the planks appears In the platform. The traction interests and other great corporations and combines absolutely dominated the resolutions committee and labor did not even get a "look in." It was this that caused the club to hold Its Indignation meeting which ap

pointed a committee to see to it that nominations for the legislature were made of men on whom ney could rely to work for these reforms In spite of the state platform. This specter has now amen to stare the democrats In. the face. The or

fact that Indiana Is a progressive state and that its voters will not stand for

any more reactionary politics. The bull moose and the republicans have

The same day the car will be run

from Hammond to South Bend. On this trip time will be worked out for
