weeeka because of a sore arm, but felt fit for duty yesterday, so was gtvena chance. The Sox grot off with a four run lead, but after New York had scored two and seemed about to score some more, Walsh was called in to save the game. The final score favored Chicago by a count of 5 to S. It isn't often that a pitcher is driven oft the slab because of bold base running, but that was what happened yesterday, and it was Hal Chase, the aggressive first sacker, who caused Lange all the trouble. Hal stole second and third in the first inning and repeated the trick In the fifth, and
after turning it the second time Lange
was taken out. Hal did no base running after that.

They thought they could give Big Ed Walsh another day of rest, making three in all. but It wasn't possible, for in a gloomy fifth inning, when Hal Chase seemed about to steal the victory for the New Tork club. Big Ed was called in to save the game for "Bill" Lange, who started. Lange hadn't been in a gam In two
nlng.
At almost exactly the same fraction of a minute, eastern time, that he soaked out a four base hit in Thursday's game Schulte duplicated the feat yesterday. The only difference was that he had to run out this one because it stuck around Inside the lot, while he merely trotted home Thursday on a smash over the fence. Both home runs were made In the first time at bat and each followed the demise of Sheckard.
You will say that a La Vendor cigar cannot be beat. If you try one.

Buffalo, N. Y., Aug. 3. J. J. McDermott of Atlantic City retained his title of open golf champion of the United States at the Country club links yesterday afternoon, winning the national
503 open championship tournament by the
narrow margin 01 iwo sirOKes. Tom McNamara of Boston was an easy second, with a grand total for the two days' play of 236. .',
McDermott finished Thursday's play
in fifth place and it looked as though
Alex Smith of New York had the title
clinched until the final round yester
day afternoon, when McDermott gave
a brilliant exhibition of the Scottish game and wound up the final round
with a score of 71. , McNamara was close at his heels, and the contest resolved Itself Into a duel between the two experts. The Boston crack ne
gotiated the final round In 69 strokes
which Is the second best performance
recorded over the Country club course. Alex Smith, 'who made a strong bid
for premier honors with his consist
ently brilliant driving and long ring
work, was forced Into a tie with M. J.
Brady, Woolson, in the finals, al
though Smith outclassed his rival In
Thursday's play. Smith ran Into hard luck during the morning's play and
the jinx pursued him during the aft
ernoon, his final ' performance being
75.

New York, Aug. 8. John Arthur Johnson has told us a few days ago that he was through with the world's heavyweight championship. That sounded great, and everybody shouted with Joy. Cot that a single soul be
lieved that Lll Artha was doing anything but kidding, but simply that it was great stuff. Now John Arthur has gone and done it. Instead of letting all his Inferior rivals scrap for the crowd he proclaims that, in his opinion yes sir, in his opinion Sam Langford. Sam McVe and Joe Jeannette are the only ones really worthy of being considered as championship caliber. . - .. ,
