As a matter of observation it should be noted that North township is the home of the independent industries while Calumet township is the home of the trust Industries. Whether or not there is any significance in this fact remains to be seen. The Independents in all lines of industry are stronger .than ever before and . they seem to have assembled in North Township. Lake county for mutual protection. , .The following are some of the independent concerns which have located in this section: the Inland Steel Co., the Republic Iron & Steel Co., the Cudahy Packing Co., the Standard Steel Car Co., the American Maize Products Co., the Baldwin Locomotive Works, the Northwestern Iron Co., and the two plants of the American Steel Foundries Co. The only trust plant located in the township is the Standard Oil Co., which was here before the other industrial development started. The Universal Portland Cement Co. it Uufflngton is a subsidiary of the steel trust. On the other hand Calumet township Is the home of the trust plant3. No independents have located there. The largest of these is the United Btates Steel Co. Then follow a string of Industries with the trust name "American." There is the American Bridge Co., the American Steel Wire Co., '.ho 'American Car & Foundry Co., the American Locomotive Co., some of which have built and others of which have purchased sites. So if ever war is declared between the trusts and the independents North township will be the independent stronghold while Calumet township will be the trust stronghold. It is a fact that may or may not have some future significance. The fact is known that the Inland Steel Co. ran through the panic of 1907 without cessation and the American Maize Products Co. is now working night and day while the trust plant at Argo is working only three days a week. ' THEY told Joe Cannon that he could come to the president's notification party in his shirt if he wanted to which will be pointed out by the Rooseveltlans how desperate Mr. Taft is getting to be. CHICAGO wants Indiana to purify Its sewage. We would like to stick Chicago's nose under some of those lake sewage pipes that pollute Indiana's water and then perhaps Illinois wouldn't be so gabby. IT'S a city man's summer, so far, good for sleep and sports and health. Not that farmers do not like these ithings, but they can't forget that corn needs warm nights as well as bright sunshine.

Congressman Crumpacker please note. SIZE COUNTS. One of the most famous and talented artists born in Holland, a land of great painters, has died at a German health resort, and all the world is told that he was English. It is true as far as long residence in London and citizenship in Great Britain could wipe out the claim of nativity, and Alma-Tadema will go into history as British rather than Dutch. In like manner Maurice Maeterlink, a Fleming by birth and blood. has lived in France so long and writ ten so uniformly in French that wheu his brilliant career ends he is likely to go into history as French rather than Belgian. And so the noted Dutch author known as Maarten Maartens, though he chose to live in Holland, early decided to write in English for the sake of a wider audience. Americans are never hampered in any such way when they seek the great honors and gainB of life. However high tnelr genius, it can find ample roonv for expression in their own country. However great their powers they cannot lack room tor action in the United States. It means much to big men to be citizens of a big country. Incidentally, it is not bad for small men, either. ENFORCING the laws aeainst carrying concealed weapons is one way of making the murder statistics of the United States look a llttl more like the figures from other civi lized countries. THE state railroad WimmlsfttAn In Its latest ( 'compilation of statistics forget to specify the number rf straphangers and toe-treadere In the interurbans of the Calumet region. EASILY the most Interesting nr. son and the foremost figure in Demo cratic affairs is the only man ever beaten three tlmos as the Presiden tial candidate of a great party. NO NEED TO FEEL GLOOMY, The editor of a Crown Point paper grows decidedly pessimistic over the bull moose movement in Lake county. Let him cheer up. Things are not half as bad as he thinks they are, when he says: The same Republicans who have always been fighting A. F. Knotts, who has been everything; In a political way, have come out at last at his cluck and crawled under his win. If he didn't expect to be tbelr leader he would not have Joined their ranks. There were too many Republicans In the c6unty for all to g-et an office, and as a last chance they have switched hoping to get 'Into greener pastures. It is surprising though, to see quite a number of ex-county officers who served two terms, and finally one still in office come out and try to defeat the Republican county ticket which was squarely nominated in good faith long: before the Bull Mooseri were thought of. Those men have rebelled against their friends who put them In office. Had they watted until after the coming election and then turned it would have looked much better. Let him understand first of all that these so-called "republicans" chiefly disgruntled office-seekers have for the past eight years fought the regular republican nominees. The Knotts combine has been in the democratic party for four years and one of its strongest factors. Suppose it does support the bull moose? What will happen? It will weaken the democratic "party. The bi-partisan combine in Hammond and Gary has fought the re-,
publican ticket in municipal, county and state politics for years. Let 'mo go. We don't need thqni.
CALIFORNIAN has caught an eight-legged fish that barks like a dog. Well one simply has to be careful of the bait or there is no telling what a fellow will catch. ARMANIS is getting another bunch of advertising all for nothing. In the meantime it will be remembered how good the republican party has always been to him. MASSACHUSETTS is going to spend $5,000,000 in the noxt five years on state roads. That ought to go far toward covering such a patch of the earth's surface. LOOK OUT JOHN! , Hon. John B. Peterson of Crown Point has penned a fervent epistle to Tom Knotta, the mayor of Gary. He writes that he will accept the democratic nomination if the people will want him. The democratic people may want the Crown Point stateeman to run but Tom Knotts will help him but little If he does. Brother A. F. is grooming himself to be the Bull Moose congressman and 'somebody ought to call John B.'s attention to the fact that blood is thicker than party ties. THE coal dealer's manly breast just heaves a little as hs thinks there is only a few more weeks till he can open the safe door again and begin to load up. WHEN Gary can raise $36,000 for a hospital fund in so short a time it is a pretty good indication of tbe most desirable prosperity there. MANY promising political careers are being crippled this year and others killed, but a lusty new crop is coming along. BELIEVE IN YOUR BUSINESS. If there were only one way on earth to make a living, there might be some excuse for engaging in a business without thoroughly believing it. But ,there are thousands of occupations offering a variety suited to every person In the world, including Indians not taxed, as Bill Nye was fond of remarking. No man is bo useless and incompetent as the grouch who doesnt believe In his work. Disloyalty, insubordination, grumbling, and unreliability are the earmarks of the job hater and the faithful performance of his work is impossible. The word "duty is despised by the growler and glorified by the man who loves what he does and believes in it. If you do not believe in your business, try first to see if you can. Don't make a change unless it is absolutely necessary, for three removes are as bad as a fire. But if you really and honestly can't put your heart and soul into what you are doinir. so do something else. Search your own mind, and then examine the classlfled columns. The world is full of opportunity, and no man is so useless who Iovm his work; for the man who loves his work will love his family, hi3 neighbors, his enemies, and his dog. Besides he will respect himself which is something that a man can never do who loathes his business hates to see the sun rise and damns his employer. A DECISIVE and final battle la said to be coming In Mexico, but It isn t breaking any speed limits In its approach. PROMINENT bull mooser siv hi. party is going to have a hard fight. Yes the way of the transgressor ia i. way hard. HOWEVER taking a little bull moose to the loved ones at home doesn't always make them happy. NOW the question is how stiff will Hammond gird up her loins for the fray at Gary on Sunday. GItEAT BUSINESS. Now that Crown Point has through interurban service to 'the Gary mills, with, fine connections with other adjoining cities it will benefit in a way probably more than Its citizens realize. Low fares, quick service, reason able rents, and other things will serve to make Crown Point an at tractive residential place for. those who would escape the heavy ex-

Bull Moose Beveridge said in his nominating speech at Indianapolis yesterday. "This Is no foray of officeseekers." If that isn't quite the funniest thing that ever came from any man's mouth. Mr. Beveridge should have said: VThis is a foray of disappointed office seekers." Look at them, count them, Beveridge, Hod Stillwell, Ed Lee and Fred LandiB, Rudy Leeds, Armanis Knotts, et ai: Then look at them in Lake County. Holy smoke! ii i nwi, i. ml.
