While other cities in the state are

still trying to solve the summer school

problem. Superintendent C. M. McDan-

iel of Hammond and Principal F. D

McElroy of the Hamomnd high school are doing some effective work here. In

this respect Hammond is far ahead of

some other Indiana cities, and C A.

Greathouse, state superintendent of

public instruction, is busy going over the state advising with the- local superintendents to get summer schools

started.

Summer school Is an institution of

several years' standing in Hammond

Practical Suggestions.

Mr. Greathouse says that under no

circumstances would he seek to have the regular school course continued through the twelve months, but that

he would have the months now Idle, as

far as the public schools are concern

ed, used for the teaching of the In

dustrlal arts and manual training,

with the sessions to be only a half

day in length.

"I would have the buildings of all

the large cities open to all classes of

pupils who desire to pursue their

training tn the way of Industrial

work," said Mr. Greathouse. "This

would Include mechanical drawing,

elementary woodwork, commercial

arithmetic, bookkeeping, physical

training, etc., for the boys. The girl

might have instruction In sewing

cooking, typewriting, shorthand, spell

ing, physical training, bookkeeping

and such other branches as there is

strong demand for. It is not the de

sire to have the regular branches

taught In the schools during the sum mer months, only In the cases of pu

plls who have failed to make passing

grades during the regular school year,

and then they should be taught for

only the half day.

Work Oat nans Her.

"This would give an opportunity for

great number of boys and girls to

prepare themselves in tne ruaimeni of some trade or art. so that th

young wage earner would not be

der, but, having passed the elementary

society is Just In Its command that man shall not eat except by the sweat of his brow, then does society not owe

it to the boys and girls that. In th

formative period of youth, . it shall

equip them for the struggle?"

Superintendent Greathouse's plans are being carried out to a large extent

in Hammond.
