PREPARE TO BUILD
A 1000-CAR YARD
Kirk Trackage to Be En
larged for Coke Oven Accommodation.
CHANGE 111 OFFICIAL PERSONNEL
Directors of the United States Steel
corporation have made an appropria
tion for the building of a new 1.000
car capacity railroad yards for the Gary coke ovens, to be located In the
east part of the city, near the Aetna
boundary.
Construction will be started In
few days. The estimates cost of the
yards, which will be an auxiliary of the 15,000-car capacity Kirk yards, Is
one-half million dollars. -
The Gary coke ovenB, which number
660, are of the by-product type - and have a capacity equal to 4,480 of the Connellsvllle beehive ovens. They are
now consuming 10,000., tons -of coal
dally, which is converted Into coke for I
the use of the . blast furnaces. It requires several freight trains to - haul this coal daily from the southern In
diana fields as well as an- Immense storage capacity. . Because of this it is necessary to build the new yards, which will be quite an institution. More than 1,000 men are employed ln operating the coke ovens. Besides coke, valuable by-products such as tar, ammonia, sulphate and other products are being obtained from the ovens as is several million feet of gas which is used to operate mills and furnaces at the steel works and the American Sheet and Tin Plate plant.
Important changes have been made
ln the official personnel at the open-
hearth furnaces of the " Oary works. Illinois Steel company. New heads will hare charge of the operation of the three units of 41 furnaces. The appointments wera made br W. P. Gleason, general superintendent of Gary works. Thomas Kenvln.- heretofore department superintendent, has been made general superintendent with Jurisdiction over all open-hearth furnaces. John Mountain has " been appointed superintendent of number one unit with supervision over 14 furnaces. H. Egeberg is the acting assistant supertendent. Ernest Smith has been appointed superintendent, and Russell Smith assistant superintendent, of
number three tfnlt, comprising 1 furnaces, and R- F.' Campbell has been named superintendent and John Dowling:, assistant superintendent of number four unit, also, comprising 14 furnaces. General Superintendent Tower has resigned his position as chief ff open-hearthnsi hit place being fllld. as atated. try Mr. Kenvln.
