To avoid a terrible death, that of being smothered in a cloud of steam filled with poisonous vapors and then cooked to death in the steam, Harry Wetgand Jumped a distance of forty feet, from a sprinkling apparatus to the ground, and broke his leg. He suffered other injuries and through Attorneys Gavit and Hall of Whiting seeks $20,000 from the Illinois Steel company. The accident happened at the coke oven in Gary. Weigand claims that in the coke plant there is a sprinkling apparatus some forty feet above the ground. He alleges In his complaint that ' cars loaded with red hot coke are hauled under this sprinkler and the water is automatically turned on. It pours down over the hot coke and cools it. Weigand was sent up on the sprinkler to repair it when a car loaded with coke was moved under it. Instantly the water was turned on and great clouds of superheated steam arose from the car. Weigand claims that to stay on the car meant death both from
