The city marshal started In on his crusade against unmuialed and unlicensed dogs on Saturday on orders from the city council to rigidly enforce the ordinance requiring; same. Three or four dogs paid the penalty for their owners" neglect or Indiscretion during; the day and more are expected to follow suit. Complaints have been made by the owners of dogs
that are obeying; the law on account of their animals not being able to defend themselves against the attacks of unmuczled dogs, and the city council, realizing; the Justifiable nature of their remonstrance, decided to have the ordinance enforced to the letter. Yesterday was one of the warmest days on record in this city and Crown Pointers sweltered in the torrid sunshine. Automobiles seemed to offer the only source of comfort and relief and those favored with them were doubly fortunate. The poor newspaper scribe, however, is never included in the latter class and news chasing; was no sinecure. Sauerman and daughter, Pauline, were Chicago visitors yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. George Trersnman are visiting friends at Rensselaer, Ind., for a few days. ! Mrs. George Schmal was a Chicago visitor yesterday. ! The grading gang on the interurban line worked all day yesterday in order to facilitate the running of cars over the line and establishing the regular schedule as soon as possible. j Dr. Schalble of Gary was a Crown Point visitor yesterday. j Mrs. Howell V. Parry and young son will return from a three weeks' so-,
journ at St. Luke's hospital in Chicago tomorrow. Mr. and Mrs.' Victor Dyer of Hammond visited with Jules Rockwell and family yesterday. R. G. Parry, Ear? Ttockwell, Misses Mayme Maillett and Clara Oser, all of Gary, visited relatives in Crown Point yesterday. The local contractors are figuring on a big round house and car shed for the Gary & Southern Traction
company, to be erected near Lotta-ville.

Mr. and Mrs. Reder of Schererville were pleasant callers in town last evening. Miss Emily Southworth, who is attending school at Valpo, spent the day at her home on Junction avenue.
Misses Gladys Pritchard and Elsie Trowe spent Friday visiting in Evanston. Miss Vida Ault of Sheridan avenue is visiting with her grandmother, Mrs. Kol, in Kvanston. Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Tharp and children Helen and David of Laporte avenue left yesterday for a two weeks' vacation, which they will spend at Lake James, Ind. Mrs. Thomas Hollett of Oliver street has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Leachman, at Danvills, 1111. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Allen of Ohio avenue are entertaining their daughter, Mrs. Berniece Allen Rose and son of New Oryeans. Anton Hem my of Sheridan avenue has returned from a visit of several months In Swltserland. The many Whiting friends of William Waite of CofTeyvllle, Kan., will be sorry to hear that he suffered a stroke of paralysis shortly after his recent visit to Whiting. His condition for a time was very serious, but he is now much improved. ' - A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Klose of Flschrupp avenue yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. George Dewey of Grant Park, 111., visited Whiting relatives yesterday. The East Chicago and Indiana Harbor telephone operators had a lawn party at the Whiting park last evening. Miss Florence Schaub of Sheridan avenue has been entertaining two classmates. Mrs. Barbara Pfelfer and son, Peter C. Pfeifer, motored to St. John yesterday, and spent the day with' relatives. James Lowe of 119th street had the misfortune to step on a piece of iron, causing quite an ugly gash through his shoe. Harry Exton of Chanute, Kan., is visiting here. Mr. Exton will be married to Miss Mary Fones of Central avenue on Wednesday. Miss Fones is the sister of Mrs. Albert Porter at whose home the wedding will take place. The Infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Hill of Rdbertsdale was baptized at the Sacred Heart church by Rev. John B. Berg. The sponsors were Miss Martha Schulze and brother, Frank Schulse. The many Whiting friends of Mr. and Mrs. harles Stoffer of Perry, Okla., will be Interested to learn that they are the proud parents of a little son. Mrs. Stoffer wa's formerly Miss Mabel Stoneham of this city. Warren Eaton of Union Mills, Ind., has been spending a few days here visiting his father, Frank Eaton.

Lon Eddy, who was arrested for intoxication, was fined $1 and costs by Judge Atchison, which he paid and was released. Miss Myrtle Pederaen of Sheridan avenue is visiting relatives in Chicago.O Mrs. E. B. Green and daughters, Helen Marie and Mrs. Tyndall, returned home Saturday from Michigan, where they went for the eenefit of Mrs. Green's health, she being much Improved. Mrs. William Reed "of Sheridan avenue was a Chicago visitor on Saturday. Attorney and Mrs. Roy E. Green of 119th street left Saturday for a two weeks' vacation, which they will spend in Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. William Ballinger of Ohio avenue have returned home from a visit with relative in Muncle and Fort Wayne, Ind. A farewell party was given on Saturday night in honor of Miss Ruth Foster of Perryvllle, Ky, who has been here visiting her cousin, Mrs. J. E. Henderson. Dancing and games were enjoyed and refreshments were served. Quests were in attendance from Hammond, Whiting, East Chicago and Chicago. There are 62,543 working women organized in Italy. There are now fifteen trade union members of congress. A new weekly labor paper will soon be issued in Toronto, Ont. In New York city 80 per cent of the
factory girls get less than IS a week. A state federation of labor has been organized in Louisiana with a membershlp of twenty-seven unions. Action was taken applying for a charter from the American Federation of labor.:' - Sheep Herders' union of Butte, Mont. Is sending out an appeal for moral and financial assistance in the work of organising the sheep herders of the country. The two factions of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers are; considering a proposition which, it Is believed, will bring them together under one head. A new organization, to be known as the Embroidery Workers' International Union of America, has recently been, formed and will Include every .worker employed in the embroidery Industry. The establishment of a labor exchange, supervised by a salaried board of directors, has been recommended by the sub-committee on employment bureaus of the commission appointed by Mayor Harrison of Chicago to study causes of non-employment
