LAKE COUNTY
ATHLETES IN
BIG MEET
(Contlaued from Pas L
went 5 feet and 7 inches without the pole and sailed upward and over the 11 feet 7-inch mark with it. He can make 11 feet 10 Inches in practice, and is
considered a winner. McCormick will
loft the 16-pound iron. Symmes and
Davidson are to run the dashes and
Hake Knotts, Townsley and Symmes
the mile, quarter and half.
One reason advanced by Gary sup-!
porters who are bold enough to hope for three firsts, three seconds and a couple of thirds, making the final counting 24,
for their optimistic prophecies is that the program is long and the doubling will be easy. At the South Bend meet, where Gary made a big showing, the
matinee was delayed until it had to be
hurried through. Tomorrow it Is
thought that the stars Wicks and
Bennett will have time to recuperate between races. However, the general
belief is that Gary will be unable to
get over ten or twelve points.
Whiting sent four to the tennis tour
nament that Is running in Joint set slon with the track meet. The first day's events on the campus courts was disastrous to Pederson and Peceny ot
Whiting, who were entered in the
doubles. Lewis' Institute administered the defeat 6-2, 6-4. Vater will handle the discuss for Whiting tomorrow. He
has placed the disk 10S feet away from himself in meets and 115 in practice.
He will be the only man from his school
in the meet. Hirsch of Hammond will go after the mile and a half. With Crumpacker and
Hirsch lie their school's only hope. They
will be accompanied by a crowd from Hammond. Gary fans will go en masse. The interest in the annual meet i stronger this year than formerly.
For the interscholastlc track and field
meet of the western schools Coach Gil
roy of the Gary high school has entered Wicks, Knotts.. Hake, Davidson, Symes, Bennett and McCormick. Wicks will undoubtedly take the pole vault, while Hake and Knotts show up good for the
relay, half and mile runs. Davidson and Symes are expected to show up well in the dashes, while Eennett is looked forward to take the broad jump and 120-yard hurdles.
LAW ALLOWS ONLY FOUR DOLLARS (Continued from Page one)
calendar day on which the registration board is In session. Neither of such persons is entitled to receive anything more, except that the inspectors may be allowed pay for the actual time that they are necessarily engaged in going to the Auditor's office for their supplies, in posting notices and in making their returns to the Auditor after each registration perior. Yours truly. "W. A. DEHORITY, "State Examiner."
Copy of Attorney-fWeaeral'a Opinion. "Indianapolis, May 14, 1912. "Gentlemen:
"To your inquiry touching the com
pensation of members of the Registration Board, I beg to respond aa follows:
"The registration statute (Acts 1911,
p. 3ii) in Section 6 provides:
"The expense of registration and preparation therefor, and returns thereof, shall be paid out ot the county treasury by the Board of Commissioners as election expenses are paid. "Section 16 of the act provides: "Each member of the election board shall receive for his services at the rate of J4.00 per day, for the time
necessarily engaged in the discharge of
his duties as such member. "Under this section and under the
construction which has been given by
the Supreme Court to statutes contain
ing analagous provisions, I am of the opinion that the members of the registration board are respectively entitled to $4.00 per day for each day they are
In session, that is to say the time from
one morning until the next morning Is
counted as one day, and they are en-: titled to one day's pay for services rendered during the day and night constituting the twenty-four hours. The pay for services while bo in session is the only pay to which clerks of the board would be entitled. "The inspector' is entitled to pay for his services In going to the Auditor's office for papers and supplies, posting notices and taking the returns of registration to the, Auditor's office. The pay to which. he Is entitled under the law for these services is "at the rate of $4,000 day, for the time necessarily engaged in the discharge of his duties:' for Instance if it should take him a fraction of a day to go to the Auditor's office, he would be entitled to a fraction of a day's pay, and ao for any other service that the la wlmposes up-
!on him. His pay is 'At the rate of $4.00 'per day for" the time necessarily' employed. These payments should be jmade after , an Itemized claim, duly verified as required by law, has been 'filed with the Board of Commissioners land allowed by the Board. ! "I have the honor to be.
"Very respectfully yours, "THOS. M. HONAK. . . "Attorney Genegal."
