It would be a good thing if the residents of the south side made aj test of this case and took some action to enforce building restrictions. It would have a salutary effect on the whole community. Incidentally it should be remarked that there are sections of the city which, because of their location, are naturally the homes of workingmen. millmen, artisans and men of that character. There should be no restrictions against such property, excepting a building line restriction, for the reason that many of these men build
their homes on the unit plan. They build a couple of rooms at a time and
then add to them.
It is better for a citizen to own a
lot with a one room house on It than it i for that citizen to pay rent. Tha
man wno owns his own home, no
matter how humble that homo may
be, it is ten times more of an asset to
the community than a transient floater. So certain sections of the city should be reserved for the home seeker of small means. He should be encouraged to build no matter hew simple that home might be. But where building restriction? are Imposed they should be enforced strictly in the Interests of uniformity of development. If the south side Is to become the high grade residential district of the city such measures 5.3 have been taken for the protection of the district from buildings of an inferior character will have to be enforced.
It is'one of the absurdities ot life that we all stand in line eager for 9 chance to take our hata off to any man with money enough to loaf at public expense, and hold our nose3 high in the air when we pass the man or woman who washes our dirty
shirts for us.
