and the whole family repaired to the back porch, taking their bedding with them. Ernest could scarcely walk, and all had bad headaches and were considerably affected. Even on the porch, the air was filled with a sickening odor from the leaking pipe, and aa Ernest's condition seemed to warrant it, Mr. Anderson at length called Dr. Schlieker, who kept everybody moving the balance of the night. In the meantime the Thomas' household had been aroused about midnight, and they, like the Andersons, were afflicted with painful headaches. Lizzie, a 10-year-old girl, was not willing to
take a chance on remaining In the
i house, and went to the home of a
neighbor, where she spent the balance of the night. The rest of the family decided to hold the fort in their own dwelling and sought out the i-oooms least affected by the gas. The Incident recalls a similar one which caused the death of an aged couple in the Calumte building. In this case, aa in the one last night, the leak was outside, and the escaping gas followed the pipes Into the roooms in which the old people slept, asphyxiat
ing them. An investigation was started by the Northern Indiana Gas company his morning and it was found that the accident was caused by a small leak in one of the pipes. Natural gas was also being used, but no blame is placed on this by the gas company. The leak was found in a pipe that was apparently in good good condition, but as yet no cause for the leak has been given out.

MARSHALL'S STRENGTH GROWING (Continued from Page one)
governor has made a good impression on the Kentucky democracy by his oldfashioned style of politics, and the talk is that the Blue Grass delegates will not be long in coming over to him at the convention. From Alabama comes the news that the democrats of that state would be glad to see Marshall appointed. A year or two ago he made a visit to Alabama and made the address at the commencement exercises of the University of Alabama. He spent several days In the state, getting acquainted with the leading men of the state. He visited several cities and he was feasted and dined
and entertained In great style by the people of that hospitable state. It Is well known that Marshall made an excellent Impression on the people of Alabama. A close friend of the governor says that he has been Informed by democrats from Alabama that Marshall may count on that state as being
for him. Strength ia Second Ballot. Up in Michigan, it Is said, some of the loading politicians of the party are out workng for delegates for Marshall, and that they are lining some of them up for him. It is the belief of the friends of the governor that he will ge a number of votes from that state. It is not likely that Marshall will get many more delegates on the first ballot than those of Indiana alone, but it Is on the second ballot that they ex
pect him to make a good showing. They say that if he can get the two hundred votes on the second ballot that they figure landing for him he will have made such a showing as will make the other candidates sit up and take notice. This showing, coming Just ' at this time, is in the nature of a surprise to some of those who have been predicting
that the governor would not get anywhere with his candidacy. The governor all along has had sublime faith In his nomination, and It Is sad that he s now more firmly confident of It than ever before. Keynotes Tonight. It Is expected that in his speech at the Democratic editorial banquet at Fort Wayne tonight Governor Marshall will make plain his views on some of the theories of government, and that he will do it in such a way as to leave no doubt as to his views on certain subjects. It will be interestng to watch the result and see how the . speech "takes" Over the country- If It meets with the approval of the political leaders It may mean much to him In the way of support at the convention. If, on the other hand, it does not meet with approval, some of the other candidates and their friends probably will Jump on it and show it up. Up to this time, however, nobody has openly attacked Marshall on any proposition that he has advanced. This fact is pointed to My some of his friends as proof that democrats all over the country are keeping themselves in line in this way so. that they may be In position to flop to Marshall's band wagon when they see It start through the convention hall.
