CUBS START WAR IN BOSTON TODAY
Boston, Mass., June 1. Somewhat depressed in spirit, the Cubs reached Boston at 8:30 o'clock last night, where they are to begin the invasion of the ea-st against Johnny Kling's braves today. The vacancy in "lower three" of the Pullman had caused the depression.
The only thing In "lower three" was a little black traveling bag that belonged to Artie Hofman. Artie had been left behind, traded to the Pirates, but In some way the little black bag that has been on so many tours of conquest with the Cubs had gotten Into the car as If a thing alive, and It is now In Boston. It will be sent to Artie tomorrow.

WOLGAST IS WINNER; YOUNG O'BRIEN DOWN
Philadelphia, Pa., June 1. Adolph Wolgast. the lightweight champion pugilist of the world, was hard pressed last night to win the popular six-round verdict over Young O'Brien. little brother of the famous Philadelphia Jack. The champ deserved the verdict, however, because of a olean knockdown he scored In the second round. He upset Toung Jack with a smashing left hand punch and stung him so badly that the youngster heeded the advice of his seconds and stayed down for the full nine count.
It was a slashing and sensational lit
tle battle, full of action all the way because each boy was trying to- punch
holes in each other. Wolgast looked good, but not as strong and rugged as when he last showed here against Gotham K. O. Brown. He fought a careful fight, as becomes a champion who has so much at stake, but was mighty, mighty busy at times, especial
ly when O'Brien shook him with some
irritating lefts to the face. From his appearance last night Wol
gast is rapidly rounding Into form. There may be a few boys who can whale him over a long route right now.
but it Is doubtful, and with a few more short fights under his belt the cham
pion will be his old self.

Ryan Is a mean fellow to work for, but he can teach the veriest tyro a lot about boxing If the tyro will stand up and take a licking dally in order to become adept. Folks who were there will never forget the way Ryan used to whale the daylights out of Jeffries each

Johnson does, and more about a lot of
other punches. He'll tach the fireman to block every sort of punch before he gets through.
