Leonard Molene, engineer on the East
Chicago city steam roller, met with a
painful and serious accident Weflnes
day afternoon :about 4:30 o'clock, when
a South Shore car crashed Into his roll
er as he was crossing the tracks in Chi
cago avenue Just east of Wegg.
Molene's hand and leg were both bad
ly crushed -and the team roller was
practically wrecked, the car escaping
damage more serious than a big dent in its front and the dislocation of Its
pantagon. The force of the impact could be estimated from the depth to
which the front rollers of the ponderous
machine were sunk into the crushed stone between the tracks, which .the
roller had been rolling when the accl
dent occurred.
The motorman who was operating the
car that did the .damage was J. Mill
house and the conductor was James D'Armand. No arrests were made, the injured engineer being taken as soon
in possible to the office of Dr. A. G.
Schlieker, where his hurts were attend
ed to. He was taken from there to his
home in Vernon avenue, Calumet.
The roller was headed east and the
car which crashed into it was westbound. Molene saw the car coming and
directed the steam roller to the right
in order to get out of the way. The
motorman evidently did not greatly
slacken his speed, and the front of the car caught the rear of the roller. It
was like bucking- up against a stone
wall, nd Drought the bigf car to an
Instantaneous standstill. There was a riot of electric sparks overhead and a mad rush of escaping (steam which for a moment obscured everything. The
passengers scrambled helter skelter out
of the car and people tn the houses
along Beacon street ran from their homes, expecting to find many Injured by the Impact. None of the passengers
were harmed, however, other than a
few bruises and a bad snaking up.
It was nee'essary for the balance of the afternoon to switch cars on the eastbound track over to the westbound
at. Hammond, and this more, or, less demoralized tte service for a time.
