I, John D. Smalley, mayor of the city of Hammond, Indiana, deem it just and fit to call the attention of the citizens of Hammond to Memorial day. May 30, 1912, and I desire to urge upon the citl zens of Hammond, in the Interests of good citizenship, high civic virtue and patriotic purpose, on that day to lay aside their ordinary avocation, close their places of business from at least 10 o'clock In the forenoon to 5 o'clock In the afternotw of that day and join with the W. The graduating ' exercises of the Dyer high school and of the St. John township public schools were held last evening at St. Joseph's hall. The pro gram was a decided success. Miss Alma M. Keilman was valedictorian. Much credit Is due to Principal Clarence J. Kennedy and his able corps of teachers: Missea Margaret Byrne, Cora Pinter, Z. Davis and Anna Deneen. Co. upt. Frank F. Helghway remarked that "the people of St. John township are to be congratulated and ought to be grateful to Trustee Frank F. Scheldt for his untiring efforts to make the Dyer high school one of the best in Lake county. Mr. Helghway appealed to the parents to send tfceir children to the high . school, where they may receive an education to prepare them for a successful career. We're from Missouri and we want to know why the Lansing Grays kept the Zimmerman Colts of West Hammond down to a score of 2 to 1 until the eighth inning and with an honest umpire and in the eighth inning they changed umpires and made the score 6 to 2. We would like to Inform the Zimmerman Colts that when a ball goes at a certain heighth directly above the plate it Is a strike and not a ball; that three strikes is out, and but three outs are allowed, etc. We would like some kind person In West Hammond to present each of the players with a rule book.
