SHLOER

AND DVORAK PROTEST

The board of public works this morn

ing heard more remonstrances on the

Calumet avenue opening and widening. Attorney J. K. Stinson representing D.

Dvorak and Jacob Schloer, appeared for

his clients, both of whom are among

those who claim the heaviest damages.

John Volk, another remonstrator.

The team is confident they will win.

which will give them a record of three

out of four games played. In the past games the local high school have had poor support in attendance and they ask the fans to turn out and give them a little help. .

Looking for Work Drunk.

Frank McDonald, 310 Conkey avenue, was arrested by Fick and Lamme at

State and Hohman last night, where he was found in an intoxicated condition and was disorderly. He was held at the police station over night and plead guilty before Judge Barnett in the city court, receiving a fine of $1 and costs? amounting to $11. McDonald stated that he had come to Hammond yesterday from New York City and was looking for work. He asked the court to show him leniency, but as he was disorderly he will be taken to Crown Point today in default of payment.

THIEVESARE BUSY.

M. Rothschild reported to the police

this morning that thieves attempted to gain entrance into the building over the Model Clothing store some time last

night by removing one of the window panes In the skylight. The glass was

not broken and it is evident that the

thieves ted to gain entrance into the

offices of the Hammond Loan & Guar

antee company, which was broken into

and robbed about four months ago. Nothing was found missing this morning and it is thought that the thief was

scared away.

Entrance was also gained in the news

agency of F. B. Hall at 143 Sibley

street some time during the- night by removing a window. Luckily Mr. Hall did not leave any money in the build

ing and with the exception of some

check books nothing valuable was taken. . ' - ' "

Invited to Meeting. The members of the Hammond Chamber of Commerce are invited to be present at the general meeting that will be held at the Lake superior courthouse on next Monday. A number of impor

tant matters are to be taken up for

consideration.

Another Wheel Stolen.

Bicycle thieves got another wheel

yesterday afternoon when they took a

machine belonging to John Socyk, 150th

place. West Hammond, from in front of the Lion store. Socyk went inside

to make a purchase and when he came

outside he found the bicycle missing. The following description was given to the police: Red frame, white rims on wheels, turned up handle bars, spring seat.

GEORGE "SADDENS HOMES."

New York. May 16. The New

York World asked George Ade

whether he was a candidate for the republican nomination for governor of Indiana. . This Is the answer wired from Brook, Ind.: "I have no wish to be governor of my beloved state. I have even less of a wish to be a candidate for governor. At the same time I have no earthly objection to being mentioned for the governorship. "During thev present rainy spell, which has delayed the planting of corn, we sit around and mention our friends for the governorship. It is our principal Indoor sport. Everybody's doln' it, doln' it, doln' It. Sometimes a man with a particularly keen Insight Into the possibilities of the autumn, mentions an enemy. "The suggestion that I might under certain unforseen conditions become a candidate, has brought mirth and laughter into many homes lately saddened by the internal dissensions of our party. It has caused no Inconvenience to friends and has not

alarmed others. It will permit the biographer to say in my obituary

notice, 'In 1912 he was mentioned

for the governorship.' Therefore, it

is a good thing. "After all, I would rather be men

tloned for the governorship than be

elected governor, and then keep on

being mentioned. With this kind ex

planation I shall retire to the storm

cellar. "GEORGE ADE."

TWO GAMES IN

GRAMMAR LEAGUE Only two games were played in the

Hammond Grammar School baseball league. Wallace sprung a surprise and won their first game of the eeason, ad

ministering a stinging defeat to the Washington boys to the tune of 17 to 6.

Lincoln kept up their winning streak

by defeating Irving 13 to 4. The games between Lafayette and Riverside and

between Washington end Lafayette ma

jor ;teams were postponed " on account of rain.

The last games of the leagues will

be played on next Saturday. The championship of the minor division will be decided when Lafayette and Lincoln clash at Harrison park at 9:30 a. m.

Both teams have won all their games

and a close game is looked for.
