W GRIP SUCKED UNDER CAR
Louis Seitzer put his handbag down on the Gary depot platform and stepped in to buy a ticket. A limited train
sped by and sucked bis handbag under the weels.
The following contents were spread
about In a somewhat demolished condition: A silk dress, two silk petticoats, three princess slips,- two com-
10 blnatlon slips, two silk chemises, and
two kimae.
Seltzer was much embarrassed, he
said in Municipal Judge Uhllr's court
yesterday, but there was nothing to be ashamed of, as he is a salesman for
such goods. The loss ot the articles.
the value of which was $105, affected him more. He was suing the Pennsylvania company for that amount. The handbag was five or six feet from the train when It went by, he said.

The commercial club of Indiana Harbor and East Chicago held a meeting last night and Judge Walter J. Riley for the Industrial committee reported on the new plants locating here since the last meeting. These included the Champion Rivet company, the new "hot nut" factory and the Schleslnger Steel Company. The latter, while located within the boundaries of Hammond, the committeeman explained, was in reality nearer East Chicago than Hammond, and East Chicago would therefore benefit quite as much from it If not more than would Hammond. C. E. Fowler of the Transportation committee reported that he had been
notified by Superintendent J. K. Gray
of the South Shore line that he had
put on the early morning car to Gary
as requested by the Commercial .Club. John R. Farovld said that his com
mittee had secured the signatures of
85 per cer cent of the property owners along the streets which are to con
stitute the Great White Way of the Twin cities, and that the extra illumination for these thoroughfares wa snow In sight. Mr. Farovid also
announced that the Joint committee of the East Chicago Club and the Commercial Club appointed to take care of the awarding of prises to school children for well kept yards and gardens, .would meet this week and announce the list of prizes offered.
C. E. Fowler stated that he had read in Thb Times of the taking up by the Hammond Chamber of Commerce of the Sanitary District proposition. He suggested that Secretary Rutledge write secretary of the Hammond organisation that inasmuch rs this matter had been started by the Commercial Club, of Indiana Harbor

and East Chicago," the latter organisation would deem It a favor If it were asked to nhare In the deliberations of
the Hammond body regarding this Important question. Mr. Fowler recalled how the Commercial Club gave a banquet quite a while ago at which the establishment of a sanitary district for the Calumet region was to tie
the special consideration and at which a committee appointed to represent the Hammond organization were the guests of honor. There was to be a follow-up meeting In Hammond to further discuss the project and Mr. Whinery of Hammond was named as chairman of the committee to prepare for this.' The meeting however never took place. Mr. Fowler was not alone In his opinion that if Indiana Harbor's thunder were to be stolen, some members of the organization which originated the movement be at least given an opportunity to hear the thunder roll, even though the credit were diverted to thj
Hammond organisation.
Secretary Rutledge ' asked for instruction regarding his work In pre. paring for the convention of the sta'.e federation of Commercial Clubs which will take place next fall. He was de
sirous of knowing whether Indiana
Harbor wished a .large crowd or only a few, and he would prepare his program accordingly. It was decided that as many as could be Induced to come, were wanted, and that If necessary a special train would be provided daily between Chicago and Indiena Harbor to convey the delegates bak . and forth, Indiana Harbor and East Chicago being unable to furnish hotil

that the line would pass Barney Cohen's property. This appeared to be the unklndest cut of all. An other objection that waa brought up was that the franchise did not specifically bind the companies to bould bridges across the canal but had the aldermen read the documents carefully, they would have seen that the bond which pledges them to do the work, covers this point by implication. It naturally follows that if the companies pledge a forfeit of $10,000 to complete their work within a' given period, the bridges must constitute a part of the work, If bridges are necessary In the completion of the project. Alderman French presented a petition signed by a number of property owners In Chicago avenue, protesting against a third track in that thoroughfare west of Tod avenue. The Gavlt franchise was the first brought up and most of the discussion concerned this line. Before the meet
ing adjourned, however, tHfc Red Line
franchise was brought up and briefly
discussed. '
