It is strange that the sandy wastes that the early pioneers regarded as a wildemes has become the most valuable land of all. Even the low marshy lakes and the shifting sand dunes have a value undreamed of by the hunter and trapper who invaded this territory 75 years ago. And so Lake County, because of its

This is not mere surmise, wild prophesy, effervescent optimism. Lake county now has a potential population of 500,000. That Is. It has the industries which, if running full force: and it has located industries which when built will result In the assembling of half a million people in this, the greatest industrial region in the middle west, excepting only Chicago. This remarkable fact has been brought out as a result .f an exhaustive investigation which has been carried on by Tm Times for the purpose, of this edition. It is based on figures which have ben procured from a hundred sources and are absolutely reliable. No Intangible quantities have been taken Into consideration. Only those factors that are computable with reasonable exactness are the basis of this article. Tun TiMXfl Is able to present for the consideration of Its readers facts of stupendous consequence to the whole region. It Is believed that their presentation will result In real estate and building activity that will be felt the, length and breadth of the entire region. More or less vague and indefinite statements are daily made regarding grasp it while the outsider Is making up his mind. It is he who Is able to make the entire middle west the market for h'.a lots and lands and who playa fair while he Is doing it. The scope of the real estate business in the Calumet region is broader than any in any other part of the country. It is developing big, broad, wealthy men. Men who take a pride in the region and do not overlook the matter of civic pride while they are doing It.
the future of the region. They are j based en rumor, speculation, a certain 1 amount of real information and on the '
whole optimism that is generally prevalent in this locaMty. , But Ths Times has got down to cold
facts. It presents its estimates for the' inspection and analysis of the man ' 'who knows all of the facts about the particular industry with which he is
connected. The source of this information being the builders of these Industries, or the men who are operating them, Ths Time, believes that they should be accepted as authentic. The actual figures show that Gary
j has the largest potential population in
the region. This Is due not only to its great expanse of territory, but also to the fact that larger industries htn selected sites In Gary than In any other section of the region. There are now 11,405 men working in the Industries which are in operation In Gary. When these same industries are working to their maximum capacity they will be employing 2S.7S0 men, and when the subsidiary concerns which have purchased sites In Gary, or for whom sites have been reserved, build their plants, there will be an additional 42.090 men employed, which will bring the total up to Tt,7S0. And. conservatively, with 70,760 men employed in the plants in the magic city its population should reach 190,0410. East Chicago comes next with a potential population of 130.000. The tremendous strides that East Chicago baa made in the past year have placed it s.cona in the list of the cities ten years hence. East Chicago's industrial progress may be measured by the fact thavt It now employs 9,69 men in Its mill, and
factories. These same industries, running full force, will employ 14.247 men, and when the new plants which have been located in that city are built, 18,10 more men will be employed, making a total of IS. 417 men. " This warrant, the above estimate of Its population. Hammond has made comparatively slow progress in the matter of locating Industries In th. last year or two. It stands third In the list with a potential population ef 66,000. But Hammond's strength Is in Its great diversity of manufactures. It has scores of small Industries, many of which are growing larger and which give the city a stability that is exceedingly to be desired. In number the Industries of Hammond far exceed those of the other cities of the region, but they are, with two or three exceptions, very small concerns In comparison with the Indiana Steel company and the Baldwin Locomotive Works.
In number Hammond and the Immediate neighborhood in Illinois, which Is really a part of commercial Hammond, have fifty Industries. East Chicago comes next with twenty-six con
cerns In operation and eight either
building or In possession of sites. Gary comes third with eight Industries in operation and with seven that have either purchased sites or had the Gary Land company reserve them for future use. The fact should be pointed out that the Universal Portland Cement Work, with its 1,000 men employed now and its immediate prospect of employing twice that number, is listed as an East Chicago Industry. This was dene arbitrarily for the reason that thl. plant Is located so near the Indiana Harbor boundary line that all of It. employe, live la Indiana Harbor and, except In the matter of taxation. It I. an Indiana Harbor plant. But to compensate Gary ha. been given the benefit ef the potential population that may be said to be a tangfble quantity as a result of the fact that the National Tube Works, which Is expected to employ 10,00 men, and the American Steel and Wire company, which will employ 4.000 men, have only reserved srt.a in Gary and have not purchased them. No xme doubt, that they will do as other subsidiaries of the United State. Steel company have done, but until they have actually purchased their sites they are on the questionable lilt But nevertheless Gary's potential population la tt.,000. and no one doubt, that it will have that number of peo
ple within it. boundaries in the nex? ten or fifteen years. , The city of Whiting, through the activities of its commercial club, has secured a fine new Industry In the Beekton .Chemical company, which now ha. the plans for It. western plant ready and in waiting only for the frost to be out of the ground before operations will commence. In Whiting there are now 1,185 men employed in plant, which will employ 3,110 men when they are operated to their full capacity, and with the 00 extra men who are to be employed by the Beckton Chemical company, the city will have close to 4,000 men employed In the next year or two. This means a potential population of 14.009 people for Whiting. The fact should be mentioned that part of the men who are employed In the plant of the American Malse Product, company, which i. credited to Hammond, live in Whiting. Many of them, probably half of them, live in Hammond, to that It is rated a Hammond plant. Burn ham and Hegewisch, which are only two mile, from Hammond, have employed in their plants 2,600 men. This number will be Increased to 1,750
when th. plants get te running full force. This gives these towns a potential population of 11.000. ' . One Important fact should be noted about the figures that are presented In Ths Times, and that 1. that the Industrie, which are now In operation in the region are either running, so slack or are contemplating enlargements and extensions which, make their present force, of men employed only about half of what will be employed when they are again running to full capacity, or have completed extensions that are now under way. Hammond, for Instance, has the) Standard Steel Car company, which la employing only 1,200 men at the present time and yet which 1. built to employ not less than 6,500 men. This 1. a factor that should make for Increased confldenoe In the business situation In that city. The great works ef city building that are In progress In the Calumet regies are only beginning to' be appreciated. Something ef an Idee, ef th tremendous increases In realty values and of the enormous amount of building that will have to be done In the next year or two may be had from the fact that the population of the region will double In the next five years. If those who will seek homes here are aocemme-dated.

I have the exclusive option on five splendid business lots in Martin H. Finnernan's Resubdivision of Lots 56, 57 and 58 in Fogg & Hammond's Addition to Hammond.
