East Chicago Bank.

The East Chicago bank has recently moved into a new anj ornate home which makes it one of tho show places of the Calumet region, and since the bank moved into the new quarters its increase in deposits has been noticeable. There are few banking establishments in the region that are as elaborate as the East Chicago bank. The Cohen building, which it occupies has been remodeled and made modern and up-to-date in every respect. The fixtures of the new bank are of Italian marble and present an exceedingly attractive appearance. The floor is of tile and the woodwork is of mahogany. The light fixtures are in keeping with with , the elegance of the interior furnishing. Since F. Richard Schaaf took hold of and reorganized the East Chicago bank it has becom one of the most progressive institutions in the region. In April, 1909. its deposits were $204,866.15. In April of this year they had increased to $305,805.42, an increase of over $100,000. The resources of the bank increased correspondingly. The officers of the new bank are: Henry Schrage, president; F. R. Schaaf, vice president; C. U. Kirk, vice president; H. K. Groves, cashier, and Mary A. Davli, assistant cashier. ' The directors, besides the officers are, A. G. Schlieker, Joseph Wadas and Charles Johns.

ADVERTISE IN THE TIMES

I In the Kenwood addition to Hammond that city has its first ideal subdivision. Homewood was a big advance over anything that had been attempted in the region up to the time it was laid out. Two things made Homewood, its building restrictions and its geographical location. ! From the very beginning It became apparent to the wise purchaser of real estate that the manufacturing district of the city would be located along the river and eventually in the great lake I district to the north of the built up iportion of the city. ! The tendency of home seekers is to get away from that district. To live on the high ridges to the southward, 'away from the noise, the dirt and the 'grime of the manufacturing district !was the ambition of the better class of

ithe early settlers.

Homenimd Planned. Those who followed this inclination profited immensely. They saw their property increase in value by leaps

and bounds. Its value was enhanced by the building of beautiful homes around them. Homewood became the ideal residential district of the entire township. When a few wealthy Hammond people cast about for a site or the palatial residences they expected to build in the future they conceived Glendale Park. This beautiful subdivision was not located in town. Its builders went farther south. They boldly Invaded the country districts and today Glendale park is probably the most beautiful residential section in the northern part of the state of Indiana. "Palatial residences have been built there and with the aid of the natural advantages it has come to be regarded as the beauty spot of Hammond.

It is natural then, when it became apparent that Homewood would be sold out in another season, that the

search for a site for another high grade subdivision should lead still '

farther south. Plan Cltj- Beautiful. Roscoe E. Woods, after making a study of the situation, concluded that

Prtcen Are Low. A word about values. The careful student of real estate values in Hammond will notice that, while the value of residential lots in Homewood has increased annually until now the choicest property on the side streets sells for $1,200 to $1,600 for 50 feet: that property much nearer town on 'such streets as Clinton and Doty have hardly shown any increase simply for

Keeping in mind the fact that the opportunities to purchase high grade property at a moderate price were slipping away as Homewood was being: rapidly being sold out the Kenwood addition was planned to be the successor of Homewood. It was not planed along the lines of Homewood. It was planned to be superior to' Homewood.. Where the lots In Homewood were laid out 120 feet In depth the lots In the Kenwood addition were made 130 to 135 feet in depth. While in Homewood there were no building lines ' and In many instances whole rows of houses were built on the lot lines with their porches projecting Into the street; 30 and 35 foot building lines were established in the Kenwood addition. Fine City Architecture. The walks in the Kenwood addition have been planned on the lot lines and the space between the pavement and the walks will be thrown Into beautiful stretches of lawn. These grass plots will be turned over to the landscape architect so that in time the long vista of trees will

of the

streets make them practically as

servicable as though they were wider.

So the assessments In the Kenwood addition are to be reduced to the minimum and the property owner will benefit. Pipe In Aleys. Another bane of the average residential district is the fact that the streets are being continually torn up and the walks undermined in putting In water and gas service pipes. This problem has been solved by . putting these utility pipes in the alleys. Once the sewers are In and the pavement Is laid there will never be the necessity for tearing up the street. In its natural advantages the Kenwood addition is unsurpassed In Hammond. It is located on the highest ridge in this locality. All through the. northern part there is a 50 year old orchard which makes It possible for the property owner to buy full grown fruit trees with his lot. This ridge is 31 feet above the level of the river which makes deep dry basements possible. The average house In Hammond Is built on stilts. It is the only

Its Accensabtllty. It is within easy walking distance of the business district of the city and there is not a lot in the subdivision that is more than a five minutes malk from the street car line. Proof that It is really exceedingly accessable is the fact that a number of wealthy Hammond business ma have gone a quarter of a mile farther out and have purchased acre plot3 where they expect to build magnificent suburban homes. The, Hammond & Suburban Realty Co. now has a large number of teams at work grading the streets. The walks are to be laid this spring, the sewers are to be put In this summer, the water and gas mains will go in at the time, the pavements are to be put in this fall and the subdivision will be dotted with beautiful homes before cold weather sets in. From present indications the Kenwood addition will be sold out quicker than any similar subdivision of its size in this district. It will take only 100 buyers to clean up the whole property, and a score of them have
