Thirty-four square mile of ftoer space in one hotel is what visitors to the second annual 640-mile Interactional Sweepstakes race will find when

they go to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway next Memorial Day, May 30. Indianapolis is being formed lata m monster hostelry to care for the 100,000 visitors expected here to witness the world's greatest motor contest, and thousands of the best private homes of the Hoosier capital are being merged into one great lodging house for the motorists who will come from other parts of the country. The Speedway has organized a department known as the "Room Bu- . reau" which is llstlbg the rooms and arranging them In the same maaner as a hotel keeps records of its accommodations and guests. Thousands of rooms have already been obtained for the nights of May 29 and May 30, and reservations are being made through the Speedway by spectators who will come from every state. The Indianapolis hotel keepers In a recent meeting arranged to co-operate with the Speedway management and to provide every person with accommodations, whether in their hotels or In private homes. Every hotel office will be a branch of the Speedway bureau and will have rooms assigned to It from the main office at Speedway headquarters. It is estimated that the full 100,000 visitors can be aecoasmodated easily in this manner. The city government of Indianapolis will also work to give aid to the visiting throngs. Police will be assigned

as guides to 6how the visitors to their apartments and scores of messengers will be engaged in addition to help in housing the city's guests. A system has been arranged at the Speedway so that every visitor who makes request for reservation in advance will . b advised before he starts for Indianapolis just where he will be located. Filing systems have proved efficient in this part of the task and duplicated cards are furnished to the visitors and the owners of the homes in which . they will be accommodated. Pull dl- . rections for reaching their assigned rooms are furnished at the same time. It is believed this will relieve the .congestion which was attendant upoa handling the vast crowd last year. In 1911 hundreds arrived at the last minute and failed to get the best accommodations so the task of doing away with hia unpleasant feature has been started three months before the date of the race. Those who are intending to witness the race should communicate with wome of the Indianapolis hotels or with the Speedway room bureau as soon as possible so that they have the best the city offers. The advance seat sale for the net Indicates that the crowd this year will surpass that ot last year. The seating capacity at the Speedway is more than 50,000, and about 10,000 seats have been reserved already. There are sixteen entries in for the race, .with tentative entries of fourteen more. The field is to be limited to thirty starters.

What: promises to be one of the most unique national conventions ever held In this country will be the Socialist national convention which will open In this city next Sunday And last probably from two to three weeks. It Is expected that 350 delegates and more 1200 visitors win attend the convention, coming from nil over tne country. Nearly every profession and occupation wil be represented in the convention. Lecturers head the list with twenty -three members. Editors follow with twenty to their credit. Eighteen of the delegates are lawyers, four are ministers and one la a banker. The vocations and number of delegates represented by each follow: Lecturers 33; editors 20; laborers 18; lawyers IS; agitators It; carpenters 13; farmers 13; printers 12; miners 10; machinists 9; clerks 8; merchants 8; doctors 7; writers 7; agents 7; housewives 6; painters 6; cigar makers 6; bookkeepers 5; ministers ; electricians 4; tailors 4; blacksmiths 3; jewelers 3; molders 3; engineers 3;' metal workers 3; showmakers 2; students 2; glass workers 2; dentists 2; barbers 2; sailors 2; masons 2. Most people wonder why the national convention of any party should continue in session for two weeks, but this is explained by the fact that the Socialist party is an organization built along the lines of a lodge or union, with a national organization as the head, and more than 5,000 branches or "locals' as they are called scattered all over the country. When the party holds a convention it transacts business connected with the organization.

would do In a national meeting. There is always a great amount of oratory in a Socialist meeting, and the national convention will te no exception to this rule. All of this consumes much time. - , -. x . In addition to the above list of delegates there will also be in the convention a traveling salesman, beemaster, seamstress, cook, silver finisher, union business agent, photographer, city employe, mayor, architect, engraver, banker, manufacturer, nurse, telegrapher and pattern maker. Reports of officers and committees already have been compiled and are being made public. The report of the national secretary, John M. Work, Chicago, shows that the Socialists in the United States have 125,626 members and that 607,674 votes may be claimed this year. The majority report of the committee on immigration, signed by Ernest Untermann, Joshua Wanhope and Congressman Victor L. Berger, urges the enforcement of the immigration laws against Asiatic laborers. The minority, report, signed by John Spargo, declares the time Is not ripe for the 'ex

clusion of the Asiatics. The two reports will provoke a heated debate in

One of the extraordinary rules of the Socialist convention is that a new chairman is elected for every day"B session. It Is not known who will be the chairman of today's session. The secretary and his assistants, however, are permanent officials. Among the delegates to the convention will be Congressman Victor L. Berger of Milwaukee, the only Socialist member of Congress. The convention will nominate a presidential ticket and the names mentioned in connection with the nomination for President are Mayor Emil Seidel, of Milwaukee; John Harrlman, of Los Angeles; Charles Edward Russell, author; Eugene V. Debs, of Terre Haute; Max S. Hayes, of Cleveland, and Duncan McDomand. of Illinois.
