GOODRICH LIKED AS CANDIDATE
aided both when his aid was needed.
He was one of the few party leaders
who. in 1910. offered his services to
the state committee for organization work when factionalism was running' riot in the Republican party. He went out and did some effective work in
some of the counties, just as he had
done in previous campaigns when the
other faction was in control of tha party organization. This party loyalty on the part of Mr. Goodrich has caustd him to be highly respected by all Republicans, and it Is the one thing above all others that has caused them to talk so strongly of him for the nomination for Governor. It is said that Mr, Goodrich has some Ideas of his own as to the management of state affairs, and that there are aom things that he would like to see done in Indiana. He Is well known to be a progressive In his views on
matters of government, although he is
not of the radical kind of progressives.
He has been In favor all along of the, renomlnatlon of President Taft, and he
did what he could to help elect Taft delegates from this state. But in do-
ng this he did not incur the ill-will
f the Roosevelt crowd, as did some of
the other leaders. ,
Among the things which Mr. Good
rich stands for and which. It is said, he
ould like to see adopted by Indians, a public utilities commission, a fair
and just workmen's compensation la-w
nd an Income tax. It Is said that
these subjects are of much Interest to him.
But Mr. Goodrich is not making any
fight for the nomination for Governor.
fact, it is known that he has been
compelled several times to sidestep the nomination this year. It Is the be
ef of many that he could have the
nomination by merely saying that he
would accept it. There are several
other nameB mentioned In connection
with tho nomination, but Goodrich Is regarded here as the strongest Tan
that could be selected to he"ad the ticket.
The Democrats are feeling extremely
cocky", over their prospects for suc
cess in the Indiana campaign mis year, and it is admitted by Republicans
that they must nominate the iitrongest ticket possible If they hope to recover the state from the Democrats. It 19 admitted by many Democrats that
party made a - grievous mistke I by adopting a state platform that is 'altogether reactionary and which - was dictated by the traction companies and other big interests of - the state, and
they realize that this fact will work against their success -at the election.
This is the situation that presents
itself to tho two parties at this time, and it seems to be the common belief that If the Republicans nominate for Governor a man of the highest char
acter and one that Is strong with his party the ticket will surely be elected.

TIMES B I REAL, AT STATE CAPITAL.
Indianapolis, Ind., April 22. James P. Goodrich is gaining favor among
Republicans as a candidate for the
nomination for Governor. Mr. Good
rich has all along said .that he would not be a candidate for the place, and
that he would not accept any political
office under any circumstances. This
has been announced time after time. I
has come from his directly and from many of his closest friends, but this
has not put a atop to tho talk that
has been going on in his favor, and
there are many Republicans who be
lieve that he is the one logical man
for the Republicans to nominate fo
the office of chief executive of the
state.
Mr. Goodrich Is well known as on
of the leading Republicans of Indiana.
ile has no enemies in his own party,
as far as is known, fhd the Democrat of Indiana have always held htm i
high regard. He has never been a fac
tional man. although his affiliations I
the past have thrown him mostly lnt
the political company of James E.
Watson, James A. Hemenway and th
leaders who have worked side by sld
with them. '
Mr. Goodrich was state chairman fo ten years, and In that time he mad
himself felt as a power in Indianapoll
CAMBRIA STEEL HAS THREE SHIFTS One of the important development! yesterday was the news that tho Cambria Steel company hadXlnltlated the program that had been talked of for some time of .dividing Its labor into three shifts Instead of two as Is at . present the practice. This means that th shifts will be eight hours instead of twelve. Details aro not yet available as to tho financial part of this change, but It la understood that it will Involve a higher cost of producing tho
products Of the mills. The Cambria
Steel company is supposed to be controlled very largely by the Pennsylvania railroad interests, and this move undoubtedly means that the United States Steel corporation and other manufacturers will follow the lead of tho Cambria company.
