Development of Inter-Communicating Thoroughfares Means Much to Region
The business thorougMares of the Calumet region afford a good opportunity for study. Unquestionably, all points considered, Broadway in Gary is by and far the most magnificent business thoroughfare in the entire region. . It is 100 feet wide in Gary, i3 flanked on either side with twelve foot walks all of the way to Glen Park, a distance of four miles, it lighted by a modern system of street lights along its built jip portion, the building restrictions imposed by the Gary Land Co. have lined it with beautitul buildings of harmonious design and even sky line and taken in all it is the model of the municipal architect. BROADWAY A XEW STKEET. But while Broadway will always le the show street of Gary It may not always be the most important street commercially. At one end of Broadway is the steel mills; at the other nothing1. Broadway just extends and extends but it does not connect Gary with any other great center, of population. It will doubtless some day la the main artery through which th3 suburban population will come Into Gary but that is a long way off.
It is a good guess that Fifth ve
nue 1n Gary will e the more important commercial street in another tlv? or ten years. Fifth avenue is not as wide and showy a street as Broadway but it traverses a territory that is full of possibilities. t It is being rapidly extended westward to the Kline avenue where It will divide its traffic. Part of it will fro northward to One Hundred and Fifty-first street and thence north
ward into Indiana Harbor and westward to East Chlcagro and on to the northern portion of Hamm6nd. INTO HAMMOND'S HEART. The other part of this traffic will go southward on Cline avenue to the road occupied by tjie Gary & Tnterurban railroad on the section line and thence directly into Hammond's business district. Fifth avenue, it will be seen, is to become the main east and west artery of traffic between the cities of North township and the cities of Calumet township. It is the most direct route from both East Chicago and iummond, and that means from Chicago, to the Magic City. It lies Just south of the great manufacturing district that is now in the process of buiU'ing along both banks of the Grand Calu-
Development of Business Thoroughfares. The Importance, present and prospective, of f. business thoroughfare can be estimated almost to a certainty. This estimate can be made, however, only by a close study of the map and a general knowledge of the general trend of the development of the region. The things that must be taken lato consideration are many and may be partially enumerated as follows: 1. The length and width of the street. 2. The population of the territory through which it and it3 Intersections extend. The character of that population. 3. Whether or not It is the shortest distance between two or more populous points. 4. Whether or not it is the logical highway between cities. 5.. The character of its surface and subterranean Improvements. 6. The number of railroad crossings or othe,r obstructions such as bridges.

met river. Other streets in Gary, principally its east and west thoroughfares, will become Important In time. These are Eleventh, Fifteenth, Seventeenth, Nineteenth, Twenty-first. Twenty-third and Twenty-fifth avenues. Other important north and south streets in Gary from east to west will be Georgia street, Broadway, Main street in Tolleston, Chicago avenue and the Clark road. Cline avenue on the Gary-East Chicago corporation line will be an important one on account of its length. WILL DEVELOP SOOX. Indiana Harbor has several streets which will develop into important business thoroughfares. Michigan avenue will take the traffic from East Chicago and Hammond and eventually
from Whiting into the heart of its business district. Michigan avenue is already a creditable business street. Guthrie street will take the traffic from Tolleston and Gary via Kline and Fifth avenues. Euclid, rarrish and Kennedy will bo the principal north and! south thoroughfres. Kennedy avenue will be the most important of the three for the reason that it is the Prst street west of Kline avenue that can be extended through to the country and future residential districts south of th.t Calumet river. All other north and south streets in Indiana Harbor are cut off by factory obstructions. CHICAGO AVEME. In East Chicago the principal cast and west street will, of course be Chicago avenue. This is primarily because it was laid out along the same broad lines that have made Broadway famous, it has the advantage of being something of a business thoroughfare now, it has the best interurban system in the region operating over it.
Jit connects centers of population with
Indiana Harbor and the Baldwin locomotive works on one end and East Chicago, Hammond and all points west on th other end. It already has a substantial development and will witness a greater development in the next five years than any other street in the region. This will come as a result of the fact that it has more population, present and prospective, tributary to it than any other street in the regionNOT HARD TO TELL THEM. It is easy to figure out and determine to a certainty the other important east and west streets in East Chicago and Indiana Harbor. They will, of course be confined to the street that are permitted to cross the canal. These are One Hundred and Forty-first street. One Hundred and Fifty-first street and what ever street is opensi directly between Indiana Harbor and Whltinsr. In East Chicago there will be but one important north and south street
and that will be Forsythe avenue This is because it is the only street which extends through the entire city from Whiting, on the north, to tha country and suburban districts soutn of the river. White Oak avenue mav i. be developed into a secondary north and south street but it is blocked by the Gibson' yards and will never overcome ,the prestige now enjoyed by Forsythe avenue. HAS POSSIBILITIES.' Hammond has a wealth of north and south streets but few east and west streets that will ever be developed as business thoroughfares. Its north and south streets of promise are Hohman street. Calumet avenue, Columbia avenue w-lth the possibility that Sohl street and State Line street will develop as econdary business streets. Beginning with 'White Oak avenue on the east; Columbia avenue, Calumet avenue and Hohman street art Just about half a mile apart. They an all, with the exception " of the first mentioned, to be opened all of the way
through from, Uke Michigan to' tin country districts south of the Llttl Ctilumet rtvsr, & distance of between nlna and ten miles. , , This compensates somewhat for itl poverty in east and west streets. . On the north side of the river One Hun dred and Forty-first and Gostlin streets, Chicago avenue. Hoffman and One Hundred and Fiftieth streets ara likely to become Important businecs thoroughfares with the advantage in favor of Chicago avenue on account of its importance In East Chicago. POORLY LAID OUT. On the south side of the river thcity was so poorly laid out that about the only streets that have a ghost of a show of developing into important " business thoroughfares are State ami
Sibley streets, with Fayette and Carroll streets distant possibilities. It is hard to tell just how the currents o? traffic will enter Hammond from "'.h east and west. In West Hammond there is an opportunity to make Burnham .".venue as important street but it would only become a feeder for State ntreet in Hammond and West Hammond. Whiting has Indiana boulevard as an important business street and On
Hundred and Nineteenth street as possible future outlet to the southern sections of Chicago. AVHAT WOULD HELP THERE, The fact should not be overlooked that traffic flows in swift currents arround obstructions. Take the ciu of Indiana boulevard in Rober'sdal and Whiting. This street should ha v been made 100 feet wide for the- reason that it carries all of the f js an-1 west traffic between Chicago and tha cities of Indiana. It is bound to become an important street. With no ' population to speak of, tributary to it streams of traffic pour over it and business places line it for the reason that It carries the traffic. The opening of One Hundred and NineteentH street over the neck of Wolf Lak would relieve the future congestion .on this street.
