CONTROLLER
E E Republican County Chair man at Indianapolis Con ferring With Republican Chairman Sims on Ques tion of Registration Law. Transacted by Gary Council Last Night. Once more established the office of comptroller, fixing the salary at $1,800. . Authorized a $15,000 bond Issue to buy real estate for a garbage plant. Fixed the dates of city liquor license expirations so that they will be concurrent with county and state licenses. Passed a city pound ordinance. "'. The office of city comptroller, created late in 1910 and abolished early In 1911, was once more legislated Into existence by the Gary common council last night. A salary of $1,800 will be attached to the Job and pursuant to the statutes. Mayor Knotts will name the appointee! A Comptroller Badly deeded, ... City bookkeeping has been In such a tangled state that a comptroller has become a crying necessity. The office is an Important one In administrative affairs and In a city of Gary's class it carries with" it the right to succession to the mayoral chair should that position become vacant for any reason. It was because of this that the council abolished the job last year. For, time the old council combine had in its mind to impeach Mayor Knotts and with the comptroller out of the way the council could name his successor. Following this came the bribery charges and the mayor" opponents, wielded enough influence to prevent the office being recreated. However, last night the mayor rode In the saddle and only legislation he desired was passed. The comptroller ordinance had been given its first reading at a previous meeting and last night only Aldermen Hess, Feuer and Rowley opposed Its passage. Another mi1 Inane Floated. A $15,000 bond Issue to purchase real estate for a garbage plant was authorized. The bonds will bear Interest at 414 per cent, will' be in denominations of $1,000 each, and will mature In ten years. They must be sold at or above par Transfer of $2,500 from the garbage fund and $2,500 from the street and alley repair fund to the street and stable expense fund was made. This is because the city now owns its own team and does work heretofore let o contractors. Other Baatneaa In n Nntahell. Other business transacted was: Reading, of ordinance requiring South Shore interurban to install gates at Tyler street. Second reading to ordinance requiring South Shore Interurban to Install automatic signal alarm bells at Gary street crossings (Virginia, Broadway,
