The April bi-monthly meeting of the
lake County Manual Arts association'
was held last night in the rooms of the' commercial department xt the Hammond high school, nd Gary will get, the next meeting.
The discussion of papers given at the
lat meeting on mechanical drawing in
the grades and high school hy Mr. Brennan and Mr. Woodbury of East Chicago was the first thing taken up after the general order of business.
it was very evident from the tacts
given in these papers that mechanical
drawing is very necessary in both the
high school and grades' where any attempt Is made to teach manual train
ing. The boys must be taught to read
blue prints and make working draw
ings before they can be successful at
any ltne of Industrial work.
The discussion of this line of work
lea to the needs of the schools of this section In this and other lines.
A few years ago the popular demand
was to force children to go to school until they were 14 or 18 years of age.
Now that this Is a law. what is to be
done with those people who have been
forced to attend school? There is no place for them in our present school system. They are generally extremes
of society and yet they are placed In
the same classes with the brightest boys and ir,la of our- country. One great crying ieed, therefore. In our chools today is the establishment of courses that v-ill fit every one and these courses, it is believed, should be more like the courses offered at our state reform schools, where they reform boys and (tlrls by teaching them a trade and giving them such an eda cation that they will be able to earn a. good livelihood and enjoy lire to its fullest extent."
Atter tnese uiseussions a paper was i given by Mr. Baum, director of manual training at Whiting, on forging and machine hop work. This gave an Idea '
of what a couse of work in these subjects ouht to be and. it was no well taken up that there was no room for discussion, o after fixing the date of the next meeting, they were adjourned. The next meeting ?s to be held in Gary, June S, and the main feature will
