WAR DEPARTMENT

FAVORS THIS REGION (Continued from Page one)

he United States engineers, for Gen

oral Bixby, who was formerly the division engineer in charge of the Chi cago territory and was always friendly

to the Calumet region, but because until now the property along the Indiana

Harbor canal was largely In the hand-i

of the East Chicago company It Is not the policy of the government to spenJ money' for the Improvement of private waterway projects.

WERE SOT DEVELOPED. Another reason for. the opposition c.f

the engineers' office was the fact that

the development Of the cities of Ham -

mono, .cast nicago, Indiana Harbor and Whiting had not reached the point where the .government would be war

ranted ln making a large appropria

tlon. .

It wa all right for the residences of

this region to say that Northern Lake

County would have 100,000 people in

nve or in years ana z&o.OUO ln ten or fifteen' years but the government does not make harbor improvements on prospects. It must know that the de

velopment will take place. FEELS DIFFERENT NOW.

Now the engineer's office feels war-

ranted in making recommendations fo-

an enormous expenditure and The reg

ion is accordingly Jubilant. It is the biggest boost the region has had since the founding of Gary and It is expect! that the good new will be reflected In

an increase in the value of dockag'e
