THE DISTEICT CONVENTION.
In vew, of the present turmoil ln
Indiana republican politics, the work
of the Tenth district convention in
Hammond yesterday is remarkable
The Roosevelt men following instruc
tions from the throne came to Hammond full of ginger prepared to
carry on a fight that would have become memorable. There was never a
rough word spoken at the convention
It was one of the largest-attended
ever held in the Tenth district. In
fact it was only equalled by the famous Hanly-Crumpacker convention held long over a decade ago. There never was a convention held
at which better feeling was displayed
There was a reason for this. It
was the determination of the Taft men to be guilty of no word nor deed
that would cause the Roosevelt ad
miners and supporters to take
umbrage. They carried out this pro
gram to the letter. A committee was
appointed at a caucus to carry the
olive branch to the Roosevelt men
The overture swept them off their feet. They were amazed. "We did not expect such consideration," said
Mr. Bauer of Lafayette when offered
pro-rata representation on the three
committees.
From that time on all was har
mony. wnen Judge Kellers name
waa first considered by the leaders
for the permanent chairmanship, It was a happy choice. Judgo Relter is not a man to favor one side at the expense of the other. Neither did he so at the convention. He was impartial in his rulings. The Roosevelt

CRUMFACKER'S NOMINATION
Congressman E. D. Crumpacker,
the Tenth District's industrious, re
spected and astute representative at of Judee Becker's juries
the seat of governmen in Washington and the only republican congressman
in the state of Indiana waa again
nominated In the Hammond conven
tion ,yesieraay ior two more years,
service to his constituents. Despite
the overshadowing importance of the
Taft-Roosevelt tilt for national dele
gates the renomlnation of Congress
man Crumpacker was far more significant to the Tenth district for there
is little doubt but what Mr. Crum
packer will be returned to Washington. The services he has performed
for the Calumet region may not be hastily enumerated. He is the man
the region needs at Washington, be
cause he is a constructive force in
legislation. The Calumet district
cannot afford to have any green horns
in congress just now. Mr. Crumpack and the Tenth district can ex
change mutual congratulations that
they have each other .

One might as well refuse to aid weak eyes with glasses as to neglect this gentle aid to weak bowels. The bowels must be kept active. This is Important at all ages, but never so much as at fifty. Age Is not a time for harsh physics. Youth may occasionally whip the bowels into activity. But a lash can't be used every day. What the bowels of the old need is a gentle and natural tonic.
