Many Lake County republicans swelled the things in the hotel lobbies particlpat ing In the preliminaries. "What would compare with a pair of human lungs were attached to the 7 A great deal of surprise has been caused In the Calumet region by the announcement that the United " States Steel corporation has sold a $30,500,000 issue of 5 per cent bonds to J. Plerpont f Morgan, and 'company. Security for a. large part of the bonds If evidenced 1-y j a first mortgage upon 'the Gary steel . works. I Of the total amount $15,000,000 is secured by a mortgage upon the Gary steel , works. The Gary works was erected entirely out of the earning. $78,000,000 having been spent. Should the steel corporation had desired It could have obtained a,t least $50,000,000 loan upon the Gary works. Ab-evidences of the excellent finan cial standing of the Illinois Steel com pany which operates the Gary plant and which owns and operates the Joliet, South Chicago and Milwaukee plants, $5,500,500 worth of its debenture bonds were also sold. The Illinois does not own the Gary works but operates it under a lease from the Indiana Steel company, the owner. However, both are subsidiaries of the steel trust. The Lorain steel works was also mortgaged for $10.000,000,. -v Verifies TIMES Prediction. Two years ago Thb Times predicted that the steel trust would bond its Gary plant. It must be remembered that the Gary works was built from the earnr Ings and In the ordinary course of events the works would have been bonded long ago. ( A couDle of years ago several Inter ests of common stockh ofde rs asked that the Gary plant be bonded and that the proceeds be turned over to the common stockholders Inasmuch as the plant had been built from earnings. Wall Street 1m Pleased. ' A Wall street dispatch reads: "From noontime yesterday on Wall street spent most of Its time trying to figure out what was the proper construction to be placed on the mortgaging of the new plants of the United States Steel Corporation, involving the sale of $30,500,000 J percent bonds, including $5,500,000 vt Illinois Steel Company debentures. "A large amount of the selling of Steel common yesterday and today was based on knowledge that this operation was intended, and the bears tried hard to make out that the announcement would give a. most unfavorable impression. But the view held among some of the most conservative bankers Is that if any meaning is to be derived from this sale of bonds it should be a favorable one. v "They point out that the bond 'sale only emphasizes the great resources of the company upon which It may lean in times like the present, when earnj,ns r running low. The officer then turned her over to Mr. Hartman for safe keeping while ho questioned her companion. He said his name was Roy Diltz and that his home is in Chicago Heights. Marshal Stec'a notified the Chicago Heights police de partment, and from there he received Instructions to hold both, as the girl had been missing from -her home for several days and because Diltz Is want ed on the charge of horse stealing. Tudge Gary's Statement on the Mortgaging of Gary Steel Works. "As authorised by the unanimous vote of the members of the board of directors, not including any member of the firm hereinafter mentioned, the United States Steel Corporation has sold to J. P. Morgan & Co. $30,5000,000 bonds on a basis of 6.1 per cent Interest. The amount will include $15,000,000 secured on the Indiana steel plant at Gary, Ind.; $10,000,000 on the Lorain steel plant at Lorain, Ohio, and $5,500,000 debentures of the Illinois Steel Company, being part of an issue heretofore authorized. "As there must be expended during the year about $20,000,000 for extensions of properties generally, heretofore authorized, and as about $17,000,000 additional working capital Is needed in consequence of the Increased business of the companies, particularly In the ore department. It has been thought advisable to secure the sum named by the sale of bonds In order to keep the amount of cash in hand up to the sum shown at the beginning of the calendar year. "In view of the fact that very large sums have heretofore been appropriated from net earnings for capital expenditures. It has been decided to finance some of the capital expenditures as above stated." this property would be three times aa great as the present Issue of $16,000,000, "The property securing these bonds is valued at upward of $62,000,000, whle the investment in the Lorain plant, against which $10,000,000 are issued, is In the neighborhood of $22, 000,000. The interest basis of 6.1 per cent on which the bonds were Bold indi cates arprlce in the neighborhood of 98. - "A reasonable Inference drawn from the sale of the bonds at this time i? that the Steel ' Corporation management has decided to maintain dividends at the rate of 6 per cent on the com mon stock. The proceeds of the sale will tide the company over the current period of slender earnings and In fact increase Its working capital by $15,000,000 or more In addition to furnish ing funds forJthe completion of exten sions and improvements already under way. Thus the company protects itself against shrinkage In working capital which would accompany the payment of the common dividend at 5 per cent for the present quarter, if present expectatlons of the deficit of $2,000,000 or I upward after such payment are borne out."
