Four hundred men, one-third of them darkies, were In attendance at the con vention, which was presided over by Harvey J. Curtis, one of the two rival city chairmen of Gary, and of thla num ber more than 100 were In the same contingent that attended the republican caucus a week before at the Rinzenhof hall. Forflgnera Deaert Knotta. A noticeable feature at last night's convention was the absence of the foreigners. Unlike previous meetings there were no bands of Poles, Servians, Hungarians, Roumanians, etc., shouting their heads off for Mayor Knotts, and their former leaders, the saloonkeepers, were just as conspicuous for their absence. That the ' foreigners and saloon men have lost heart In the Knotts cause was quite apparent. . And but one foreigner was elected out of the twenty-eight precinct committeemen named. The very few foreigners present precluded the naming of any more. In previous years one-third, and some times one-half, th ""7 committee

would be foreigners. Of the committeemen elected six are known to be anti-Knotts men, but outside of the Sixteenth precinct squabble the whole proceedings were conducted, contrary to the usual form, on a pretty square basis. Piper Ousted from Poet. As things now stand Gary has but

one darky committeeman as compared with three blacks in the republicans last night. Sam Laws, the negro, last night defeated W. H. Piper of the tan contingent, and Jack Meehan, the lead- j er of the Irish lily whites. .Many i democrats were pleased to see Piper i removed from the party councils. A , week ago he was a trouble maker at the republican convention at the Binenhof hall and tried to raise a mob to smash in the doors. As soon as the voters began to repair to the precincts the three-cornered : fight In the Sixteenth started the dis- i turbance of the evening, and Bill Cain, ! who wen Into the crowd of howling blacks to restore order, came out much ; faster than he went in, as did other would-be peace makars. 'o Hasora Were Drawn. Each contingent elected Its own com mitteemen, and on several occasions It was feared that razors would be drawn so heated did th contestants become. "To, black devil, yolv was at the re publican meetin" last week," shouted a black to a Piper tan. "Shut yoh face, yoh nigger. Yoh en tered mah hen roost last week and ah can prove It," was the answer. "Well, ah don't live In a shoo string house." Yes, but last week yoh went up with dem here white trash and prom ised you'd vote for Hodges and ah saw yoh with Charley Greenwald at dem republican folks convention." This and a similar line of comments passed back and forth as the black mob threatened to run upon the black gang. When the fuss went into the credential committee Laws won out. Col. Mayo Lends Sanctity to Session. Among the, participants in the con vention last night was Rev. and Col. A. C. Mayo, who had a darky preacher along with him. The colonel, who preaches the holy word on Sunday to the blacks and sells them Colonel Louis Bryan of "baby doll" fame lots during the rest of the week of late, has been striking and austere figure in the, republican ranks, but last night he show, ed his loyalty to Mayor Knotts by being in attendance and making many motions and seconds. Another attendant and one who took part on committee work was Phil Mekatinsky, brewery leader and one of the bosses of Gary's Ghetto. Mekatinsky was one of the big shouters at the republican convention a week before. List of w Committeemen. The make-up of the new Calumet township democratic committee Is as follows: GARY. 1 F. H.
