Bretach Makes Speeches.

Xearly half an hour after the first

meeting had quieted down the Green

wald forces held a second meeting of ratification as it was called. Attorney Clarence Bretsch who made quite a hit as an orator made a speech and again

nominated the previously prepared list of delegates.. R A- Ressler, a big two

hundred 'and fifty pound lawyer, acted as secretary and Mr. Greenwald again

wielded the gavel.

Looked Like Democrat Session.

Several henchmen of Mayor Knotts

and members of the police department

Harbor -was represented by a tremend

ous throng. They packed the big au

ditorium full to overflowing and the noise might almost have been heard in Gary. CHy Chairman C. L. Kirk called

the meeting to order, read th call for the convention and asked for nomina

tions. Tom O'Connell nominated E. W.

Wlckey for chairman and coupled with

his nomination a motion to close.the

nominations forthwith. Abe Ottenheimer did not propose that anything like that be put over and rose to a point of order. Joe Meade then nominated W. E. Jewell for chairman. There was then a division of opinion as to what

form the vote should take, whether a

piled with Abe Ottenhelmer arose ostensibly to make a motion as to how to name the delegates, but really to make a speech for filibustering purposes. ... . Tom O'Connell and his crowd were too smart to stand for this., Enthusiasm was at Just the pitch they wanted it, and they did not mean that anything should occur to change the tide of events. Abe's silver tongue, 'had it been allowed to have proceeded, would undoubtedly have won the day, but the Indians howled him down and the oratory was obliged to suspend. C. E. Fowler then nominated the organization's ticket and Abe Ottenhelmer countered with another ticket. It was at this point that the chairman

ruled that the vote should be by division of the. house,, and it was at this point that Julius Friedman trespassed

for a moment into hostile territory for the purpose of getting back his Oklahomans, when he was corralled and

held while the vote went on amid uproarou demonstration. Mr. Patterson made a speech before the meeting was over in which he thanked the meeting. His speech was received wlH enthusiasm.

at the second meeting and then if

casual observe dropped in . he would have thought that a democratic con

ference was on.

August Hecker, the Toleston brew

ery wagon driver, mounted a chair and harangued the crowd, but his

speech was soon drowned by Mr.

Bretsch s impassioned words which were directed at the hearts of the

union men present. Mr. Bretnch's Little Joke.

The grand finale came when Mr.

Bretsch wearing, a facetious smile suggested that the crowd show its opinion

of Mr. Hodges by Instructing the dele

gation for him. Mr. Bretsch presented

a resolution to thl seffect.

Dr. Pavelich, a Gary democratic

lawyer, who used to be a member of

the Austrian-Hungarian reichstag was the first one to shout "no" - and the

noes" that answered rivaled the very

thunder in the heavens. Martin

Schwartz who runs a restaurant down

stairs ran up stairs thinking that a riot was In progress but he was quieted down when he heard that the.faitht ful were merely giving their opinion of Mr. Hodges.

For the second time Mr. Bretsch tried

to Instruct the delegates for Mr. Hodges. Of course, every one knew

that even if the delegates were instructed that Mr. Bretsch would be

among the foremost to w-ield a carving

knife upon Mr. Hodges ambitions.

"To Hell With Republican trty." "Gentlemen, again I ask you to In

struct this delegation for Mr. Hodges,

if It is only for the sake of the republican party, shouted Mr. Bretsch.

"To hell with the republican party,'' was the rejoined from the center of the crowd. The cheering was loud and prolonged. "That's right to hell with the repub

lican party, what has It ever done for

Gary?" came from another demo-republican patriot. "Hurrah For Tom Knotts.1'

"Hurrah for Tom Knotts," answered

a third office holder.

"Hurrah for Greenwald, voiced a

fourth man.

"Feevo " which means beer, came

from the fifth. "I move you we adjourn," said Jack Burke., a democratic! dive-keeper from the "patch." "I second the motion," shouted a burly negro. "The meeting is adjourned," said Chairman Greenwald. Greenvrald Hold Reception. Following the adjournment i Mr. Greenwald . became the man of the hour and the police and office holders were the first to congratulate him on putting it over. Then he held an impromptu reception and as the "Hunkles" negroes, saloon keepers and dive keepers filed out they stretched forth their paws to wring the right hand of "Charley."
