NO IMPROVEMENT IN STEEL Chicago Mills Fairly Active, But Eastern Situation Is Less Favorable.
The finished steel trade found no evidence of improvement In the last week, aocordinjj to the Iron Agf. Tho rncouraRiDR feature is that the mills have kept up -so hiKh a rate of operation with all the handicaps of severe i-old and freight blockades. In the central west' and in the Chicujso district a 90 per cent operation is carried on. hut eastern works fall considerably hort of this. Chicago mills are now less able to make quick shipment than those at Pittsburgh. Th Bessemer and Lake Krie is di
viding 1,500 steel hoppers and gondolas
nd 500 box cars between two Pitts
burgh Interests. Announcement has been made by the Carnegie Stel Company that 1:15 cents is its minimum price on plates and structural shapes. There are variations of Jl a ton from
this price, however. In recnt sales. New
York City contributed largely to the
February total in structuaral lines. The United Klectric power house, 14.000 4 on s, has been taken by the American Brldgre Company. The Iron Trade Review reports that In the Chicago -district, considerable Inquiry has developed for southern Iron. Prices are fairly well maintained, although some . southern iron is available at $10.25, Birmingham. Liberal f rabricatingr orders have improved the structural situation from a tonnage standpoint. The Webster Building, Chicago, 1,600 tons, has been let to A." Bolters' Sons.' The Gary rail mill was started with a fair accumulation " of Orders. The Kansas City Terminal has ordered 2.000 tons of rails from the Ilinols Steel Company and the Tennessee Central has-placed 2,000 tons with the Tennesee Coal and Iron Company.

NEWS OF THE SHOPS. , -An olive spoon and fork come in a pretty case .together at $1.95 each. , Pretty -copper trays, either plain or with a beaded edge, are to be had from $1.50 upr , . ' Half cotton black equestrienne tights at $1 are-thick," soft and elastic, and to ' many persons would make all the difference in this cold weather between comfort and misery. A sale of mannish tailored white vshlrt waists for 85 cents each was one of the best values among yesterday's ' bargains.". These offered an excellent opportunity for the business woman. Among the smart new footwear for the spring are boots of white leather . with black patent leather vamps. Fancy footwear of this kind if chosen with care, to match the suit is very effective. . Where there are small children In - the family and many little frocks to be made, the narrow edging scalloped in color is a simple and satisfactory trini-
i ming. This can be bought for IS cents the piece, reduced from 25 cents. French rice powder now comes in compressed form. A neat little box, containing the powder and a tiny puff, which takes up very little space In the handbag, may be had for 35 cents. This is more convenient than the loose powder, as only a small quantity comes 'oft on the puff, and a hasty dab may bo given without danger of spattering the. coat front. A waist of fine batiste tastefully trimmed. with real Irish crochet can be bought for $3.50. It has a lace yoke of a rather elaborate design and the high collar and three-quarter length sleeves have each two. narrow insertions of a plain lace of fine quality. ' Fine tucks on the shoulders complete the decorations. Another good model at $3.25 is ' of, batiste simply ' decorated with fine tucks, valenclennes and a little embroidery.
