The Women's Christian Temperance Union have a meeting slated for tomorrow afternoon at which important business connected with the future welfare of the society is expected to be transacted. It is understood that a movement is on foot tending; toward the amalgamation of the AV. C T. T and the Women's Franchise leatcue into one society In order to obtain the rljrhts of suffrage for women to combat the brewers, who are said to be ar
rayed ajrainst the- W. T. V". and consequently any movement that will give them franchise rights. A fund of one million dollars is reported available in the brewery coffers to combat any movement tending toward the votins of women. The meeting tomorrow, it Is understood, will deal with the situation to a considerable exten. The annexation question has calmed down to a considerable extent In Crown Point and little is heard on the question which raised such. a hub-bub here some time past. It is thought that the present ordinance before the council passed to third reading will receive its quietus in committee and if any annexation of territory is made it will be in a greatly modified form from the ordinance submitted at the last regular meeting. The council will take a conservative view of the matter and not make any move thai might endanger the amicable relations between the farming communities and the business men proper. As has been stated before there is no imperative need for hasty action on the annexation question, and
with the exception of one or two qases it will probably be the wisest move to supply additional territory as the demand calls for such. Pr. and Mrs. A..--1 Salisbury were Chicago visitors yesterday. Attorney John B. Peterson transacted business in the Hammond courts yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wheeler and Miss
Kaye Weaver saw BiUie Burk in "The
Kunaway Girl" in Chicago last evening. The Wilson building on the south side of the square is receiving tho finishing touches at present, and it ii expected that the rooms will be occupied
by the Weiner dry g"Ods and clothing establishment before the middle of
March.
The Foresters will hold a special
meeting tonight to Install a financial
secretary and senior warden in their
respective offices.
Mrs. Elmo Mann was a Chicago vis
itor yesterday.
High up license and low down poison
continue to decimate the pet dogs
around the city, one or two being dispatched daily. Keeping a dog in Crown Point is a luxury In every way but trouble and many threaten to go
out of the business entirely. Crown Point is facing a house famine at present, every house of modern style and conveniences being snapped up before the owner has a chance to hang out a "for rent" card. The problem of supplying the demand for fairly modern houses is a serious one, the almost prohibitive cost of building making the average citizens with building intentions lurking around him figure on the advisability of the venture before making the move. Several more important real estate deals are about to be put through In Crown Point and vicinity, and getting options on desirable property in Crown Point seems to be the fashion at present. Every one seems optimistic as to Crown Point's future, w-hich Is the best kind of a condition for the booming of real,- estate. Judge Kopelke and bailiff Will Steeb are attending the superior court sessions at Hammond this week. Hal Dickinson is attending a Hammond business college.

BLAH
AlthouKh efforts were made to keep it a secret. It was learned today that the blast that shook Gary at 10:28 o'clock yesterday morning resulted from an explosion in the open hearth department. Molten metal was poured into a ladle containing- a large quantity of water. A sharp explosion followed this piece of .carelessness, and it was only a miracle that several were not killed and injured. Hundreds of employes in the big: steel works heard the explosion, but as yet do not know the producing cause. The blast that resulted very violent, and for a few minutes the nervous thought that the Aetna powder mills were cutting some more capers. No great damage was done by the explosion.

Indianapolis. Ind., Feb. 29. Governor Marshall Is being blamed for the utter rout of the antl-Taggart forces in the Democratic party in this state, and the Boehne Democrats are saying that the Governor could have prevented the party from falling back into the hands of Tom Taggart if he had done what they had a reasonable cause to believe he would do. Boehne's decision to close up his headquarters -in thi3 city and give up the fight from this end of the line for the nomination for Governor caused" dismay among the anti-machine Democrats who had pinned their faith to his boom as the Moses that was to lead them out of the Taggart wilderness. AVhile no word has been received direct from Boehne, who is in AVashington. It is expected that within the next day or two he will announce his
withdrawal from the race for thu nomination. His managers have folded their tents and gone back to Evansville whence they came, and they did so acknowledging defeat at the hands of the Taggart machine. Of course, anyone that knows anything about tho political game can see at once that a successful campaign for a state nomination of this kind could not be carried on from there. Taggart has a stronger hold on the Democratic party in Indiana today than he ever had before in Ms life. He owns and controls the entire organization, from one end to the other. He picked the state chairman end all of the other organization officers, and without the slightest trouble. Democrats find themselves now in much the same position that they were in before Thomas R. Marshall came into the ring

'resident who might stand a chance of being elected if nominated. This belief is now stronger than ever, since the collapse of the Boehne boom. This proves that everything is working out to the liking of Taggart, and that nothing can head him off now in controlling the Democratic party in this state.
All of this Is causing the Republicans to chuckle, with glee, for they say it
will be much easier to win with Tag
gart in control of the Democrats than
if the machine had been overthrown. Governor Marshall started out as Governor with every opportunity to make himself the leader of his party In the state." And the Republicans feared him more than any other one man In the party. That their fears were well grounded was shown in Wi campaign in which he was elected and In the campaign of two years ago, when the Governor took an active part and when he was yet counted as an anti-machine man. But he has lost all of his prestige, and the Republicans have lost all of their fear of him. He has allowed the chance of a life time to slip through his fingers. The Republicans are jubilant over the turn of affairs in the Democratic camp. It means that no Republicans will be attracted to the Democratic ticket next fall. In fact it means that thousands of Democrats will be driven away from the ticket, because they have shown in the past that they will not stand for Taggart and the things he represents in politics. The Democratic party this year will be the same old Democratic party that it was when the Republicans whipped it so regularly. It is expected that within a short
time there will be an outpouring of Republican candidates for state nominations. There will be no lack of can didates this time.

In many cases the sales have con
flieted, there having been a number of i Instances where choice lots in local!-! ties particularly in demand have been' sold by no less -than four different salesmen to as many purchasers. It was to avoid duplication of such transfers that the company was obliged to check and recheck the contracts in order to make sure that two purchasers were not given title to the ?am,e lots. Fully one-half the addition has been ; sold out in the past six weeks, representing one of the most extensive sales
by retail that this country has known ' within a corresponding length of time, i
so often tn the past. So, when Boehne came out as candidate for the nomination for Governor on a straight forward anti-Taggart anti-machine platform they had every good reason to expect that the Governor would come to their aid as an antimachine Democrat" and help them to swat the machine. But' he did not do anything of the kind. Taggart was too nmooth for even the Governor. It was not long afterthe Governor took his office that talk started to the effect that he would make a good candidate for President, and Marshall heard and listened to this talk. It stuck in his ears and the bee began to buzz. It la

Of course, Taggart had a good reason for starting this talk. He knew that, if he could get Marshall to believe that he would be for him for President Marshall would not interfere with his plan to control the tate organization and make all of the utate nominations. In other words, the talk about the nomination for President was a sop which Taggart threw to Marshall and it did the work so well, that when the anti-boss, anti-machine movement started Marshall gave it no aid or assistance. He did not want to offend Taggart while the talk of the presidency was in the air. The Boehne people say that the Governor had it in his power to Jump in and redeem the party from the grasp of the machine, but that he failed to do so, and that this is the real reason for the collapse of the Boehne movement. There has all along been a general belief among the politician that Taggart's promise of support for Marshall for the ' Presidency was merely a scheme to keep Marshall in line for the Taggart state slate, and that when the right time came Taggart would claim to see the light and change his
