has carried the weight of an enormous Investment for years, has never paid a dividend. Situation Chingv.
Only a few years ago it is said that the stock holders became so dissatisfied with the fact that the company was not
nule to make a better, showing that a
number of hem sold out their stock. The coming of the piant of the Bald
win Locomotive works changed the whole complexion of affairs. C. A.
Westburg, the man In charge of the
company's propetries stated today that
the sales of lots and acres by this com
pany alone would amount to $1,000,000.
The company which will make the
next best killing Is the Calumet-Ken
nedy Land Co. It is said that the
properties of this .company threatened
to become a drug on- the market and
special assessment-s were eating up
prospective profits at a rapid rate.
But the coming of the Baldwin plant was like magic. The values doubled and trebled and it now seems likely
that the company will soon be able to
declare a Tiandsome dividend. Fortune Made.
And the smaller real estate dealers will make fortunes. The Smith-Bader
Davidson Co. bought out the old Washington Park Land . Co.. for Just about what the houses cost the men who built them. It looked like buying a white elephant but today the members of the syndicate w-hich took over this property estimate that they have made $75,-
000 on the. deal. The property of ' tlje -East Chicago Land Association was put on the market at seven o'clock on Wednesday night of last week. By nine o'clock on Thursday the entire 103 lots were disposed of and contracts were signed up for $45,000 worth of property. This
property was handled by C. C. Smith of
East Chicago. .
. Fortunes have been made by private individuals. Giles Warner of Hammond piced up some of the choicest business property "in East Chicago and his esti
mated profits are said to be close to
$50,000. With him were a larger num
ber of friends who all will make money
from the property they have purchased.

AT CHRIST CHt'RCH. ' : (Centributed.) ' ' ' The Rt. Rev. Charles P. Anderson., bishop of Chicago, will preach this coming Sunday night at Christ church. Bishop Anderson easily ranks' as the greatest orator and preacher In the church. Probably no one else Is so emlnently endowed for this work as the bishop of Chicago, gifted with a handsome rugged physique of sufficient heighth to be commanding, a face, of spiritual beauty and strength, a voice that is pleasing and yet full of power and back of all this, a mind richly endowed and a spirit the truly partakes of the living God. It Is not surprising that the bishop Is such a power among men. ; f " . Chrls church Is Indeed, fortunate to get him. for he Is naturally ao much in demand that it Is difficult to get Mm. That Memorable laterr lew. . I vState Chairman Lee of Indiana Ima.
ea. into national political prominence by
reason of a statement given out by him
at Washington, D. C. at the time of
the holiday meeting of the Republican nation committee at that city. Mr. Lee's statement was. to h effect that he did not believe President Taft, If renominated for President, could carry Indiana. Mr. Lee was criticised by many Republicans because of his statement. He continued to express the belief voiced - at Washington. .-He took
the position : that while he knew he was violating the "accepted ethics of politics," at the same time he believed he was telling the truth, and that he was giving conditions as he found them, and not as he had. hope to find them. He took the position that President Taft ought not to; be renominated, and' later predicted that . President
Taft's name would be presented to the
Republican national convention. "I have violated machine ethics," said Mr. ' Lee, in discussing his antl-Taft declaration, "I admit that. But I am not ,nor even will be, a machine politician. I have tried to tell the truth." Storm of Criticism. Following the Lee anti-Taft statement and its wide publication. Chapman Lee was severely arraigned by practically all the Republican newspapers of Indiana, and many Republicans of prominence expressed emphatic disapproval of his' course and of his publicity methods. In some quarters the most severe critics of Mr. Lee declared that Lee could not be excusel for his anti-Taft utterances, even though he had found -conditions justifying his assertions. Most of the Republican editors took the position that Mr. Lee had made himself Ineligible to continued service as state chairman by taking an anti-Taft position. Vlgororus language and short and ugly words went to the making of some of the scathing editorials that discussed Mr. Lee and his antl-Taft statements. There were many interesting, divert
ing and peculiar developments of the strange situation as time went on. One editor who had denounced Lee, ending
his editorial roast with the words "Mr.
Lee, here's your hat," later took a poll of his county and found conditions In that particular county as Mr. Lee hal described them. The editor came out
editorially with a frank statement that the real conditions could not b
ignored. At the same time he did not
justify Chairman Le's frank avowal of
the facts as Lee previously had dlscov ered them to be.
