"OH DH" ANSWER TO BOEHME STATEWIEHT

timrs Btnc vr, . AT ITATK CAPITA U Indianapolis, Irid., Jan. 19. The followers Tom Taggrart and Crawford Fairbanks, who also are the supporters cf Samuel M. Ralston for the Pmooratle nomination for Governor, are so

mad over the statements Issued by Congressman Boehne denouncing Taggartism and proposing to make a red hot fight against the French Lick boss that they refuse to talk on the subject. This Is especially true, at the state house, where the Democratic office holders

amnMi i in 111 wm it '--uwnF!J mewb

who are candidates for re-election are nil Taggart men. ' They refuse to discuss Boehne's' latest effusion. One man. when asked for his opinion of the Boehne statement, merely answered: : "Oh damn.' . , The Taggart crowd realizes that It has a fight on Its hands, and there is to be no quarter shown by either side. The only man Is the state house who snems to be unperturbed 1s W, H. O'Brien, auditor of state, but you never" can tell when he is excited. He has such an even temper and quiet disposition Jhat he never allows himself to show off a mad spell. But the real reason for O'Brien's complacency at this time lies in the fact that the whole thing, may yet load to his nomination for gorvernor. It will be remembered that some months ao there was talk of O'Brien as a candidate for the nomination, and he never has said that he

would not .take the place. But this . j i ' g Iff H AT V ' Southernmost Settlement In the : World.

Ralston and O'Brien are Taggart men j

It was apparent that it would not do for

both of them to make the race, and this meant that O'Brien had"to lay aside

any inclinations and aspirations he might have had in that direction and content himself with again being a candidate for auditor of state. . But the defiant and warlike attitude of Boehne has changed the situation. It is now pointed out that If Boehne makes as much headway as he feel3 .he will make and If other candidates come out to hold some of the votes away from him, It may turn out that Taggart will find he cannot put Ralston over for the nomination. In that event it would be but natural that he shuld turn to O'Brien and nominate him. And this is what makes O'Brien feel good

over the new development.

j The appearance of Senator Robert E. Proctor, of Elkhart, as a candidate for the nomination for governor may be a part of this plan. Politicians here are

looking at it In two ways. They point! jout that the more numerous are thc j j candidates for the nomination for gov-I ernor the less chance has Ralston of

winning, because, they say, if he does not

i mil ua 111 ''L poiiwi. ii uuauij m n j

not win at au. j ney say xnis iooh ; like Proctor's candidacy may be in the

i interest of Boehne or at least In the .interest of the antl-Tagart movement. , : Proctor undoubtedly will have his own ' county delegation and probably wil' i have some other votes in the conven

tion, and these, it is said, would have

gone to Ralston except for the candidacy of Proctor. The other view taken by some of the politicians her is that Proctor's announcement may be a part of a scheme to nominate O'Brien for governor. It is pointed ot that In the first place the democrats of Klkhart county were for O'Brien, but whn it became known that he was not a candidate they favored the nomination of Ralston. Now? they say, if Proctor can hold his own county and some other delegates it wll lreduce Ralston's chances just that much, and It may help to lead the convention to a point where it will be found that Ralston cannot be nominated. Then Taggart could switch to O'Brien and nominate him, with the aid of Elkhart and other counties that favored O'Brien in the first place. Of course, nobody seems able to figure out yet just what the Proctor candidacy means, or Proctor himself has all along, until the very recent past, refused to allow his name to be considered for any nomination. He declined to run for lieutenant governor and he also declined to stand for another term as state senator. So his announcement that he is out for the nomination for governor Is rather mystifying to some of the Democrats.

So thoroughly aroused Are the Taggart Democrats over Boehne'a announcement that he will fight the Taggart machine to the last ditch that they are talking about making trouble fbr Ben Bosse, Boehne'B manager. Bosse Is the ! newly elected district chairman .of 'the first district, and ' as such he 1s a member-of the state crm-

THE lonely Argentine colony ot Ushuwaia, at the extreme end of South America, is by far the southernmost settlement in the world. It lies more than 1,300 miles farther south than the Cape of Good Hope and considerably below Punta Arenas, which Is generally supposed, to- be the most southern human habitation. Few vessels ever visit this land -of perpetual winter, which, through the greater part of the year, is completely cut off from the outside world . Ushuwaia, which numbers about

S.000 souls, is made up of Argentine 1 ML I g. fl 11

colony native Indians, fur traders and missionaries. It is the only settlement on the Island of Tierra del Fuego and serves as an American Siberia for transporting prisoners for various offenses. Argentine, which owns this re

mote island, does not have capital pun-

A.CROyP OF.C1TJZENS ishment and' disposes of many of her convicts by transporting them for life to this Island. The sothernmost country of the globe is cold and barren, its rurred mountains and towering glaciers being naturally unproductive. The native Indians herd sheep, from which they produce a little wool. The wild animals yield some furs, and there Is even some mining for gold, but here the native products cease. The settlement of Ushuwaia Is policed by some 260 Argentine soldiers. The southernmost settlement stands upon Beagle channel., which lies far

south of the strait of Magellan. Few vessels ever pass through this tortuous waterway, preferring the longer Journey around Cape Horn. Beagle channel cuts deeply into the great mountains and glaciers, whose shores present some of the most awe inspiring scenery in the world. Ushuwaia is to be visited this winter by a cruising steamer, when the steamship Bluecher of the Hamburg-

American line will. pass through Beagle channel on Its annual South American cruise. This will be the first time a large steamer has passed through this remote channel, so that Its pas sengers will be the first body of tourists to enjoy this wonderful scenery. Leaving New York In the latter part of January,. Ushuwaia will be reached In February, which is midsummer in this extreme southern region,- although even then summer showers may be replaced by snowstorms blown in frona the south.

mittee. It is well known that the state committee is completely under the domination of Taggart. and practically every member is a Ralston man. Whlla none of the talk has come from members of the state comittee. some of the democrats who stand around the edge of the . crowd and listen , and talk are saying that the -committee , ought to take Rosse in hand and punish him for taking such an active . part . in the Boehne campaign. It would not cause any surprise here if pressure was brought, to bear on the committee to

reprimand Bosse or even if he should

be requested to . resign as a member oi the committee. That shows the Intensity .of the feeling, among the Taggart Democrats. It shows, the, extent to which they ate aroused oyer the Boehne, movement, They are, scared un'tl their, teeth rattle, and. their manner and the way they ' use the English

language in talking about Boehne and Bosse. -Boehne has made many friends by the way he has started out for the scalp of the Taggart crowd. His statement in which he'-announced his intention of waging war on theld crowd to oust it from control was a refreshing Incident of the ear)y .campaign, and nothing that has happened In politirs In recent years, outside of the statement of Republican State Chairman Lee that Taft cannot carry Indiana, has caused as much comment in this state.
