will go eastward from the Baldwin locomotive works for the reason that the

land is owned by the Gary Land Co,

and will probably not be opened for subdivision purposes and 1 further for

the reason that the tendency of the growth of papuiitloj,.even Ja Gary..liJ been westward., towards Tolleston, Hammond and Chicago,,

It is argued that after Indiana Har

bor and East Chicago have been built up by the hordes of workmen who wil! work at the Baldwin plant, the plant of the Buckeye Steel Castings Co., tho McCllntic Marshall Co. and the smaller

industries that have located in East Chicago that the surplus will take advantage of the. convenient transportation, the cheap lots . and the splendid

location of the north side in Hammond and will live there. , ,

Kmall " Dealer. AetlTt.. It is always noticed that the small

real estate dealer In 'more active than the big ones In disposing of property. This, makes It patent that if the small dealer becomes intrenched in the North

side of Hammond, that, he will do mors

to draw the population In that direction than a larg company like the holding

company . of Baldwin directors -which

has secured over 50 city blocks of prop

erty to the south of Indiana Harbor.

It will be remembered that In th

booms that followed the .locating of

Gary that while tbe. Gary Iand Com

pany offered vastly superior locations

for residences in its first subdivision

that small dealersnvbo owned property

west 'Of Broadway - and ' south -of the

Wabash tracks ana 1 the dealers who

made purchases at -Tolleston and Clark

road created more cf a market for their

property.- miles wh-' from the stec

plant than" the Gary Co. was: able to

create for a vastly superior offering at

the very, gates of the' plant. v - This study "of -the present real estat

boom Is made' Impartially with the idea

of pointing out the line of probable d-

velopment that'will result from the lo

cating ' 6t . the Baldwin works, showing

that not only East Chicago and Indiana Harbor 1but Hammond;, as 'well, will share the advantages of this great real

estate boom.

The report of Harry Moose, cityclerk of Gary, shows the financial and legislative .workings of the steel city during the year 1911. Cilief interest centers in the flnarcial part of the report. ping of fhe public trough. An average

tween these two newspapers.

Constant Demand for More

Laborers at U. S. Steel Plant.

No man In Gary- is out of work be

cause of any lackof it. Ever since the first of the month all of the plans of

the Vnlted States Steel corporation

have been short of men. The main shortage Is among the laboring men

and there are constant demands for more laborers.

Round l"p Ijasorera.

So great was the need of men a few

days ago that officials went to the police station at night and -rounded up

forty homeless men and gave them

work. Another official went down to the south side saloons in an effort to

engage 300 laborers but 117 was all

that he could find.

The cold weather is responsible for

thes heavy demand for unskilled labor

ers. Freezing of water ad steam pipea

has also resulted in heavy requisitions

for eteam and pipe fitters. Scores of

men are needed to snovel coal at the coke ovens. ' Laborers work twelve

hours and get 17 cents and hour. There will be several hundred rnetj

added to the payroll of the Gary plant

of the American Sheet and Tin Plate company which is constantly placing newly completed mills In operation. Resumption of building operations just as son as the present cold spelr let3 up will create a gentJne shortage In the Gary labor market
