A pleasant afternoon was spent by a number of Hammond women who were Invited to the home of Mrs. Ward Kennedy in Truman avenue yesterday. iMrs. Kennedy entertained the members of the. Oak Leaf Embroidery Club at their regular bi-monthly meeting. There were several in attendance. The early part of the afternoon was devoted (to needle work after which the guests were served with a dainty two course luncheon. The table was decorated with carnations and ferns to carry out a color scheme of pink and green. In two weeks on Thursday afternoon, January 18th Mrs. F. A. Scowden wl'l be hostess to the club members at her home in Ada street. Mrs. Scowden will entertain at a thimble party. t ENTERTAINS AVITH CARDS. The members of the Sunshine Club held a meeting yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. J. C. Jackson in feature of entertainment at the meeting and pedro was played at three tables. Those who were present devoted the afternoon to sewing and accomplished a great deal of ,work for the society. Plans were also male for the next regular meeting to be held Thursday, January 11th. The menYbers will meet for an all day session. It is desired that many members attend as business of importance will be transacted. At the close of the business hour a social session was enJoyed. The afternoon was spent with nedle work until four-thirty o'clock when the guests' were invited into the dining rtom and served with an elaborate puncheon of - four courses. . Mason, former United States senator from Illinois and one of the best lecturers cm the American platform today, will lecture lecture in Hammond on Thursday evening. Jan. 18, at the Hammond theatre, under the auspices of the Hammond settlement house. The famous speaker will donate his services to help alony the cause of the settlement house, and Manager C O. Klngwell of the Hammond theatre will also donate the use of the bouse, so that the proceeds for the evening's entertainment will be j practically clear profit. - The ladies of the settlement house will begin at once to sell tickets and a crowded ' house Is expected to turn out for the occasion. Negotiations have been under way for son)e time to have "Billy" Mason speak, and yesterday Miss Virginia Brooks, who ha been conducting the negotiations, secured h!s promise for the 18th. Mr. Mason has a number of set lectures. He has promised to give the greater part qt his two best ones, "Citizenship" and "Picturesque Amertca."
