SCHOOLS RESUME AFTER HOLIDAYS

(Special to The Times.) East Chicago, Jan. 2. The Christinas holidays for public, and parochial schools" ended with the advent of the new yeal. and today saw pupils and teachers at their desks ready to resume their work. It has been customary in the past to observe as a holiday the day following New Year's day, 5n order to give those who leave town for New Year's an opportunity to get home. This year the board of education dispensed with this

extra holiday and it was given out to teachers and pupils that they would

be expected to be on hand Jan. 2. .

The enrollment seems about normal

for the season, fo far as heard from

but ' Superintendent E. N. Canine had

attention next fell on the little chill which was hejpless in its effrts to ex tinguish the flames which were leaping from his clothes into its face. Its little hands were frightfully burned. Mr. Callner lost no time. He, caught the girl up in his arms and sinothered the flames, by pressing the child to hi.j bosom. 1 .. . r Fnral On Monday. By this time assistance had arrived and the burning clothes were removed

from' the woman and she was put to bed. The three- doctors of the town

promptly responded to the call and worked heroically with the injurej

woman. It wa: found that she was practically roasted alive. , Over fourfifths of the surface of her body being burned. Her lower extremities were burnsd to her shoe tops and her face was charred, while her hair was nearly all burned off her head. She suffered great agony until 10 o'clock at night, when death relieved her of her awful suffering. "While the baby was severely burned it will not prove fatal. ilr. and Mrs. Ptratton are young people and were married about four years ago. The funeral was held on New Year's day. No damage to the building resulted, the firemen having quickly extinguished the flames.
