world. Equipped with motion picture cameras these men are recording for us present day happenings. For instance, the other night a local theatre had a set of these reels. There was a balloon flight at St. Claude, France and then a French aeroplane race was shown. The motion pictures oflhe launching of the world's greatest dreadnaught, the "George V" in an English ship yard followed. Then the scene was transferred to Turkey. The Turkish fleet passing through the Golden Horn under sealed orders was an inspiring spectacle. So cloBe were the ships
that the faces of the sailors on board could be easily distinguished. Fol
lowing this came the blessing of a
holy ikon in far away Russia. The
motion camera showed the quaint Russian streets, the priests and
monks, the military and the people, with such accuracy that one would
think that he was viewing the pro
ceedings from a near by balcony.
Next the spectators saw war scenes in Tripoli. Soldiers, horses and artillery landing from the transports, the camp in the desert, and finally the return of General Caneva and the new Italian governor of Tripoli from attour of inspection. Following this came a recent American . event of which this and other newspapers have printed much about. Motion pictures of this character are of inestimable value. Every time
you have the, chance see them.. They will certainly help to broaden your fund of knowledge..

The use of Intricate farm machinery can not be delegated to the ordinary farm laborer, except at the risk of its early, destruction. Hence it comes about that the increased use of farm machinery in the south spells for this section the great fundamentals of enduring prosperity.

COSTS AN HOUR A DAY.
This country is full of boys and
girls who have been through the sec
ona ana third grades; graduates o the eighth grade are as thick as the
frogs of Pharaoh, and collego men and women are numbered by the
thousands in every state in the union;
but the man who begins to study at 20and continues until 60 is as hard to find as the teeth of a hen or the
legs of a fish.
People are too willing to be in the cheap class, because it costs an hour
a day to get into the other. It means
for a working man, one hour a day
devoted to study along general lines
It means for the business man one
hour less for money getting. It
means for the lazy men one hour of the Impossible. But It is good for the mind, if done regularly, good for the body, if done carefully; and the reward i3 sure. Men become rich only by conforming to the Invariable rule that they must earn more than they need to sustain life and save the margin . By the same rule, men grow intellectually. ' It is necessary to learn more than the average to keep mentally above the average. And the intellect grows faster, with the same energy, than aty honest bank account on record.

THE FEAR OF DEATH. There is probably no county in the
state of Indiana where there are so
many violent deaths per capita us there are in Lake County. Hardly a day passes but some one is killed in
the mil,s, in a railroad accident, in work of construction or any one of a
score of other ways..
The strange thing about it all is
the fact that it i3 taken so much as
a matter of course. Tell the averags
person that to move to Lake County
means that they Increase their chances of death by violence ten fold
and they would be horrified.
But it is a fact that the chances are
ten to one that the resident of Lake
County will die of a violent death as
compared with the resident of one of
the semi-rural non-manufacturln?
cities of the state. '
But no one expresses a fear of death in Lake County. Apparently everybody feels as safe as though
grave dangers were not continually
besettingg them.
u is said tnat in tne civil war
where there chances were one in ten
that the man who enlisted would be
killed there was surprisingly little
thought of death.
Death Is a thing that the average person thinks menaces only to the other fellow. It is a strange thing
that intimate association with danger
makes flirtations with the grim reaper
seem ordinary.

EAGLE ATTACKS Tt RKEY. While w; C. Duncan, of Columbus,
an attorney, was driving through the
country, last week, he noticed a flock of turkeys in the road. The big birdj
seemed to be frightened. Duncan looked up'and saw a large eagle soaring
above the flock. He tried to frighten the eagle away, but it alighted on a tree until he drove away. Duncan called to the farmer who owned the turkeys and' they drove back together.
The eagle had attacked and partly eaten one of the turkeys. Steel traps have been baited with the dead bird, but the

IT SPELLS PROGRESS.
The southern farmer, like his north

to this fact alone may be attributed the increased agricultural prosperity in the south. The use of improved farm machinery by southern farmers means a great deal more than the mere fact of their ability to buy It. It means that they are solving the problem both of the scarcity cf farm labor and of' Incompetent and shiftless labor. It means, too, that they have gone in for intensified farming and the restoration of the soil's fertility. The use of ex-

THAT OBSTINATE BOY.
If yonr boy is a determined young chap who wants his own way con
gratulate yourself. Why?
Because obstinacy is a great asset
In the' capital stock of manhood.
It is a force, to be sure, that needs to be given proper aim and direction, but It holds a large place in the make
up of the mental powers. It has to
do largely with success or failure.
The boy who is hard to manage has
stuff in him that stays.
He is like the powerful borso that needs only to be properly curbed and
guided.
Do not think your boy is a bad boy
because he wants his way. The force
ful man wants his way and gets it.
If he has a will of his own the proper way to manage him is through
his reason and his affections, but Never by force! Do not try to "break his will."
He will need all bis surplus will power later on in life. When yoa
break his will you break his manhood.
Even should you succeed apparently In coercing him you cannot be sure he is
"conquered." He may be deceiving
you in his seeming acquiescence.
And deception on his part tends to
hurt his character.
It is no easy task, this undertaking to manage a high strung boy. But it is worth while! Mothers usually 'succeed better in such a matter than fathers. The father may chastise and browbeat the lad into submission. lie may get the promise of obedience or sullen acquiescence, which has no lasting effect, but If the mother knows! She appeals to the best that is in the boy his affection for her. bis manliness. And tb.it appeal la the only effective method of controlling a human spirit, Utilize the boy's obstinacy. It will make a man of him. We are only Just beginning to appreciate the tremendously effective force of the human will. It is the power that does thing. And if the will power is to do things it must have Its way. It may be Ktilded nnd directed in t proper channels, but coerced Never!
