be accommodated. The police were called to Front street about II p. m. on Wednesday night by the Information that a fight was In progress. Officers Pinkerton and Muilaney answered the call and found Paul Palko, Joe Kozacik and Andrew Salita engaged in a free-for-all exhibition. The men were all placed under arrest, and taken to the police station. When
searched Palko had a revolver in his pocket, which still had three bullets In, one having been shot off during the progress of the fight. All were booked on the charge of assault and battery and placed under $100 bonds. Palko was also placed under $100 bonds on the charge of carrying concealed weapons. He furnished the necessary $200, and Kozacik and SaUta each in $100 bonds, after which all were released. The case will come up before Mayor Parks at 7 p. m. this evening.
Arnold Exton and John Morrison are both home from Purdue university at Lafayette to remain over the holidays with his parents. William Wuestenfelt,
also of Purdue, went to Wood -River, III.', to spend his vacation. Miss Mabel Barnhart, who for two years has been musical director in the Whiting public and high school, has given her resignation to the -board of education, taking effect today. Miss Barnhart's work in the Whiting schools has been very successful, and the board of education regret losing her, especially in the mlddh? of the school year, A successor has not yet been appointed.
Miss Barnhart leaves Whiting to take charge of the Music in the State Normal school at Charleton, 111. Her many friends wish her success.
. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Clesko of Euclid avenue on Wednesday evening. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Chilla was placed under quarantine yesterday, one of their children being
111 with diphtheria. Mrs. Hoyt Wright of Woodlawn visited with Mrs. Frank Lauer of Sheridan avenue on Wednesday. The Men's club of the Christian church will give an oyster supper from 5 to 8 p. The Christmas exercises of the Congregational church will be held this evening. The Whiting friends of Louis Wirtz, butcher In the Atkln & Tharp market, will be sorry to learn of the death of his wife, who passed away at her home on Sibley street, Hammond, on Tuesday evening, about 4 p. m. Mrs.
Wirtz has been very ill for the past several weeks, but her death nevertheless came as a great blow to her busband. The remains were shipped to Peo:i 111., yesterday for interment.
