There Is a faction in East Chicago

The Indanopolis News said last night

Three members of a former gran

Jury or Lake County, with J. D. Ken

nedy, an attorney of East Chicago, and

another man whose name was not mad public, conferred with Governor Mar

shail and Attorney General Honan fo

two hours yesterday morning on a sub

jeCt relating to the actions of the grand

jury at the time it was in session. Thj

nature of the conference Is being close

ly guarded. "It is reported that the visit may have had to do with proposed prosecution of Mayor A. G. Sohlleker and sev

eral other East Chicago officials and citizens, against whom the grand jury

returned indictments several months ago for "grafting" and trafficking in vice, and that the Governor is helng appealed to to lend his aid In the prosecutions, as he is doing In the- Gary "graft" cases. The East Chicago Indictments resulted in a case against W. C. Harding, former street commissioner. The state failed to get a conviction, and the other cases were dropped by Prosecutor Charles Greenwald. 'A telegram to the Governor from Mr. Kennedy was the first intimation that the Governor had of the intended conference. "Attorney General ITonan asserted that the visit was not in connection with the recent bribery charges in Gary; that it had nothing to do with the gambling cases which have been the outgrowth of Tim Murphy's statements to Governor Marshall; that it did not

concern the Federal investigation of dynamiting cases now in progress in

Indianapolis, and that a rumor that It had to do with the commutation of a

death sentence for a Lake County

murderer also was groundless.

"'There is a great chance that a pub

lication of the reason at this tlms

would work hardship and injustice to certain persons, and for that reason it has been agred that nothing will be

said about the situation at present

sai.T Mr. Honan. 'The matter is one which refers entirely to the artinn of ( the Lake County authorities at the time ;

There is also a director's room, cashless office, private office, an dreal estate and insurance office. The safety deposit vault is a massive concern, being concrete and steel lined. There ts a three ton door on the outside. The vault contains several boxes of different sizes. The cash vault also has a three ton door on the outside of the vault, with two Inner doors. Th fixtures were installed by the Mosler Safe Co., of Hamilton, Ohio. With Mr, Schrage now being th? owner of one of the finest business blocks in the city and the owner of one of the most prosperous banks in the region, it is most fitting to give a review of events, which have taken place in the business career of this worthy citizen since coming to Whiting.

Mr. Schrage opened his first store In

Whiting in 1ST0, which was an exceed

ingly modest affair. The articles offered for sale filled only a few shelves and could all have been placed in a good sized cupboard. The store grew in importance and was soon the central

feature of the neighborhood activities.

The postofflee was established In 1871

with Mr. Schrage as postmaster and tn

father's Institution and-' owing to the lattes'-s poor health, he has practically retired from active duty, the sons, who are the officers' of the bank looking
