of these papers and I have not yet seen where any of their writers have taken' the question of the sand of this region as a foundation for steel mills. Into consideration as a menace to the stability of the Industries. "My attention was railed to the article In the South Chicago paper, but the absolute untruth of most of the statements contained therein, arauscfi, more than angered me. We take the whole thing as a nice litle joke here. The accident was a bad one, but as to its being significant of anything more than Is embodied In Itself alone, this is ridculous. one sH V --This mill has been standing ten years and practically all of the machinery Is running today as true as It was the day it was put In. This shows there had
been no settlement worth mentioning. Right onthe start there was a little trouble with a few of the machines, this befng caused by the fact that they were not givenm sufficiently deep foundation. As for the statement that the unslability of the sand in any way impairs the perfection of the finished pro
ducts of the mill, either here or at Gary, this statement is so wild as to be unworthy of consideration. As a matter of a fact a little give Is better than no give at all, this being proven by the manner in which all of the sky scrapers of steel construction are built. A cer
tain amount of spring Is provided for by the achitects, as a heavy Jar would otherwise be disastrous. It is not true that the Gary products do not bring the market value. "As for departments in this mill being down, eight of our eighteen sheet mills having suspended. This is wholly due, however to a lack or sufficient orders to run full strength, and the shut, down was In effect before the accident. The accident had nothing whatever to do with the face of only closing theseTnllls." It has ben pointed out that the embankments of all of the elevated steam railroads entering Chicago, are of sand. If sand were not reasonably solid It seems doubtful whether It would be used as material for the embankments.
