BOMBARDIER WELLS II 11 Keeps Championship ByBeating Storbeck; MayFight Kid McCoy. London, Pc. 19. Bombardier Wells, England's hope foft, the heavyweight tvoxlnsr championship, made good in impressive style last night at the National Sporting club, when he knocked out Fred Storbeck In the eleventh round of a. scheduled twenty-round contest. ( A terrific right-hand swing to the Jaw nde the battle. Storbeck was unable to make much headway against Wells superior cleverness, but put up a game contest. By his victory Wells retained the heavyweight championship f England. i Wells' victory was a triumph for Knglish boxing in two ways. It demonstrated that the home fighting prod- , uct was superior to the colonial maul- ' er, and it also showed that the game which was threatened with extinction when the Wells-Johnson contest was stopped, was safe here as long as it is conducted along sane lines. - The fight was witnessed by a large crowd. The National Sporting club-was crowded to the doors' and there was MONEY , FOR CHRISTMAS If you want it. We'll let you have all you want and give you all next year to pay It back, if you like. great enthusiasm. The victory of Wells was a popular one, as Knglishmen are beginning to think they have a real fighter In Wels, who showed wonderful improvement over his reoent contests. ' ' , The battle was a contest between a rusher and a clever boxer with a hard punch. Storbeck, the rusher, put up a game fight, carrying the fight to Wells continually, but he was no match for the cleverness of the English champion, who cut him down with jabs and had him weak before he administered the finishing blow in the final round. Wells looked considerably heavier than ever before. He had taken a couse under one of the leading English physical culture experts, who built him up. The way he moved in and out of clinches and his foot work in general was the subject of great admiration. His exhibition last night was the best of any of the heavyweights England has had in years. Ring laJlowers are calling him the Priscoli of the big fellows. Kid McCoy, America's famous fighter of a few years a 50. Is mentioned as Wells' next opponent. He is touring in Europe at present and plans are being made to match him against the English champion for a twenty-round bout before the National Sporting club. It is probable that unless this contest is arranged for the near future Wells will r.iak a trip to America and try to get on with some of the promising heavyweights there. He has been offered $20,000 for a series of contests with Al Kaufman as one of his opponents. He has not .decided as yet whether he will make the trip. CENTRAL LEAGUE TO CUT EXPENSES South Bend. Ind., Dae 19. While the salary limit in the Central league will ' be increased at the January metting of the league to be he'd in-Grand Rapids,1 the expense of maintaining a club will not be as great as in the past season, if the plans of President F. R. Carson for reducing the expenditures of the league materialize, A change In the limit, which for four years has been $1,800, is certain and it is improbable that it will be decreased. However, if the limit is increased to $2,000 the limit will be so strictly enforced that it will be impossible for any club to cacry a team at an expense of $3,000, which was the case of at least half of the Central league cities this year. What is more no player will be allowed to receive a side agreement and to prevent this practice all players will be required to sign an affidavit that all he receives is named in the face of his contract. BAT NELSON STILL IS "DURABLE DANE" New York, Dec. 19. Battling Nelson showed Brooklyn fight devotees that his endurance Is unimpaired when he outfought Wtlllei Howard in ten rounds at the Irving A. C. last night. It was a clinching match most of the time, Howard being warned repeatedly by the referee for holding. The Dane wore Howard down by his incessant rushing and body punching, disregarding Howard's long range blows. Nelson won as he pleased after the seventh round. While Nelson's performance against Howard did not load him
with gold medals, the former champion showed conclusively that he is far from being a dead one. li MIKE" MURPHY TO TAKE REST Philadelphia. Pa.. Dec. 13.
