Spectators at the six-day bicycle race In Madison Square Garden witnessed some lively sprinting yesterday and some thrilling spills. The worst of the latter was due to the tire coming ofT Lorenz's wheel. He was thrown and slid tflong the irack for about '.wenty feet. Before John Bedell could steer his wheel out of the way he, too, was thrown. It was thought for a time that Lorenz was seriously hurt, but after being attended by the physicians the rider went to his dressing rftora for a rest. 1 The riders entered a protest this afternoon on account of the poor construction of the course, many tires having been punctured by palls that have worked loose. The management finally ordered the men to stop riding for fifteen minutes, ' while a dozen carpenters hammered the loose nails back Into place and clinched them. The first twelve hours of the race saw many sensational sprints. The fast riding was done most of the time by the foreign teams, but. Kramer, Root and Moran all had their share in it. A sprint started" during the morning by Fred Hill, and then taken up by his partner, Eddie Root, netted the team hree-quar-ters of a lap when the sprint was stopped by the officials because Moran punctured a tire. As a result the efforts of the teams to gain a lap on the riders were at one time slightly ahead of the record. ' The interest of-the public In the lorug grind Is shown, by the large attendance. In fact.- the record for admissions 'during the early morning hours was broken today, the Garden being well filled practically until' 6 o'clock this m"-ning. The score at the end of the twentyfirst hour was: Kramer-Mor'an. 45.5.4; Fogler-Clark, 455.4; Root-Hill, 455.4; Halsted-Drobach, 45514; J. and M.
