hould be mayor, but it happened that

the nomination made by the Democrats was not any better, and there was little

hoice between the two candidates as

far as desirability was concertied. This

being true, Shank won by a big ma

jority. That is how he happened to be

come mavor of Indianapolis.

But since he took that office he has

tveloped wonderfully. He is still the lown that he always was, and he has

that old-fashioned, happy go lucky, free and easy manner about him that

makes friends with everybody. He is

admitted to be absolutely honest and well meaning. When he makes a mistake it is because he did not know any better. He is still the same old "clod

hopper" that he always was, but he has learned a great deal about public business and affairs that he did not know when v.e took ofltce.

Shank evidently has tbe Interest of

he people at heart, at the same time

that he plays politics.' He knows the political game well, and he is hot afraid to play it. He does not seem to care whether anyone likes what he does, so

long as he thinks it Is all right.

Mayor Shank, as Is known, has de

veloped into the bitter foe of the middleman in the fight against the high cost of living, and this has brought

fame to him from all over the country. Last summer when a campaign wai

started for better conditions In the Indianapolis city market Mayor Shank

fell in behind it and played a prominent part. It was shown that there were

gross abuses at the market, and that

the customers were being held up right

and left on prices of foodstuffs which they bought there. The middlemen hrfd

the market by the throat and were

charging enormous prices for the prod

uce sold on the market. The consumers were the sufferers. So when the fight started Mayor Shank appointed a com-

m.isslon to investigate conditions and

to make recommendations as to how to

improve market conditions to bring

down the cost of living. This commis

sion made a report and an ordinance drawn along the lines of that report

is now pending in the city council.

Not only did he do this, but he fought.

the commission men in another way.

He went out Into the country, and even

into other states and bought and ship

ped into the Indianapolis city market a total of sixteen carloads 'of potatoes and sold them at-retail to the people

at a little more than the I cost price

This had-he effect of bringing down the

retail nrice of notatoes from $1.30 a

bushel to 75 cents. Then he had sev

eral carloads of apples shipped ln'and

sold them at retail. And just before

Thanksgiving, when the prices ol

chickens and turkeys were so high

here, he went out and bought hundreds of fowls and sold them on the market

at low prices.

Thus he brought the producer and

the consumer together.'" Now, Shank it is believed had the governorship in view while he was doing all of this, for his handling of these things certainly

added to his popularity.

No long ago Shank made a speech at

Newcastle in which he said that maybe

he would com back to Newcastle some day as a candidate for Governor. That was the first time that he ever said so much on that subject. He also said in his speech that he was a Republican and proud of it. "And," he said, "I don't care who knows what kind of a Republican I am. I am a standpat Republican." In the last few weeks Mayor Shank has been going about a great deal over the state. One day last, week he went to Worthington and made a speech at a dinner given there in his honor. Ha

made quite a hit with his quaint humor and common every dny style. From Worthington he went to Evansville to give the city administration some ad

vice in regard to a water works mat

ter. Those who have been watching hi3 doings lately say that surely ho has

something in view or he would not

m ike these trips around over the stat. taRing his lime and. spending his own mnev when there was no need of doing so. ;

What effect it would have on the Re

publican convention it tne name or

Shank should happen to be presentea at a candidate for Governor is a ques

tion. Some of the politicians say that tl-ere is a good prospeet that the Republicans will be forced to put into the s-ate platform a county option plank, and they admit that it will make a lot of trouble, unless the candidate for Oovernor can overshadow that issue with her personality. They say' that Shank could do this, because he would be an unique figure In a campaign, and that the people would pay more attention to him than to the platform. They think he could walk around the local option issue without offending anyone.
