WELCOME, GENTLEMEN! On behalf of the cities of the most wonderful manufacturing community in the middle west, we extend to Senators Shively and Kern, to Congressmen Barnhart and Crumpacker as well as to other distinguished guests, the heartiest of welcomes. Indiana Harbor, East Chicago, Hammond and Whiting join in doing them signal honor. The time may come when they
can do much for the great Calumet region. The time is here when these cities believe the federal government
should help them by making the Calumet river a waterway and one chief asset an artery of trade. All that
the region needs now is a waterway,
and the man or men who succeed in getting things started will never regret it. Indiana's senators can make, a ten strike when the opportunity presents, by aiding the development of this region as far as its waterway is concerned. We rejoice in their visit here, where they have many warm friends. May they have a right royal time, and come again and again. ,
who go down to the sea in ships for a livelihood are attended. When they 'hear prayers said for these they give it little more than passing thought. And more fully do we realize it when we read the following summary from The Outlook: "During the past twenty years more than 8,000 British vessels an average of nearly eight for every week have been lost at sta. With these vessels
nearly 23.000 persons perished, of whom about 80 per cent were mem
bers of the crews and 20 per cent
passengers."
The loss of a ship and three per
sons each day for twenty years is indeed a record of fearful destruction, and this, too, for only one nation. In
the year 190S, according to Llyods'
register of the world's shipping, 800 vessels were lost. Sailing vessels ex
perience a much higher percentage of loss than do steamers.
village is reported to be very gloomy because of the opposition encountered in his arbitrary conduct of civic rule across the borderland and he plaintively yawps that nobody loves him. To paraphase the maiden's words: "Your bunch loves you, John, and you can get out If you don't like it." People would be tickled to death.
DR. Munyon Is reported to have said "that the horrors of war are nothing to the horrors of disease."
You can see the doc saying this as he sticks his digit into a hole in the at'
mosphere if you look keen.
WILSON AND DOGGEREL. Woodrow Wilson, one of the numer
ous presidential candidates on the democratic ticket, made an address re
cently in which he showed his alleged
versatility by asserting that many Sunday school hymns are mere doggerel. " We have no argument with Mr. Wilson on the point he takes. One of his admirers, however, recently penned a bit of verse. It is: "There's a man who is bigger than Taft today. Though not in avoirdupois, But bigger in brains and in statesmanship, And you bet he is making a noise. Now, wherever you go, and wherever you meet, You're sure to find some one. Shouting the name, and with wild acclaim. Of Jersey's favorite son." This Wllsonite sent the stuff to Wil
son and the latter sat him down, pen
ned his thanks, complimenting the
poet, Heaven, forgive us for calling him that, and endorsed the sentiment. Perhaps it would be better for our Sunday school hymns to contain a line
or two asking the support of the peo
ple for Mr. Wilson's candidacy; then he wouldn't say they were doggerel.

THERE seems to be a great deal of
surprise in some parts because this paper refuses to try the bribery cases

AT any rate, the Williston trial at
